From “about us” sectionCeltic sites - Lostbhoys - Kerrydale Street

“The website is designed mainly for Celtic Supporters outside the U.K. and Ireland (all are welcome of course) as a place where you can come and tell of your experiences of supporting Celtic around the globe.

“We want Supporters Clubs to send us information about their Clubs, how/when you were formed, where you meet, number of members, your websites addresses and functions that you might have coming up and we’ll put it on the site and include it on the weekly podcast. If you are watching the games alone in some dark corner of the world, let us know and we’ll put you in touch with other fans you can watch and discuss the match with.

“We can be contacted at admin@lostbhoys.comand you can download the podcasts from www.lostbhoys.com or directly from iTunes.”

Lostbhoys Podcast (link)

In June 2009, the LostBhoys started a podcast in order to help support attention for their site and activities. Assisted by the already much established Celtic Underground, the LostBhoys hit the ground running and created around 5 podcasts in their first month, and have continued to amazingly create a whole show every Friday.

Their emphasis as per their website, is to focus on ex-pat Celtic supporters. The compère is the very affable Chris McGuigan, an Irish ex-pat who was living in Houston in the US (when the podcasts began but since moved back to the UK), and with his colleagues they have been emphasising the experience for Celts abroad and their links with the club. The first podcasts took in both the Australian and American Celtic supports’ experiences! Since then they have had ex-players and other supporters’ clubs organisers from all over the globe. Clearly shows the ambitions and scope for the podcasts.

Very entertaining and educational in many ways, this is another very welcome addition to the Celtic podcast world. The podcast conversations are generally very laid back and easy going, so the enjoyment value is high. In February 2010 they also began a phone-in which was later spun-off into the HomeBhoys! Much better than the drivel on the radio.

The LostBhoys in time expanded from just Chris McGuigan to a fuller team of three mainstays:

  • Chris (“Christy Ring”) McGuigan – the main man and compère.
  • Gerard (“Grumpy”) Dale – Canadian based Celtic supporter. He has a half-empty-glass outlook to bring us all down to earth.
  • Jamie (“Statto”) Burchell – A US convert to Celtic and football. He is the self-confessed statmeister on the show and has gathered a bit of a cult following to become the star of the podcasts for many.

Must add a note on the surprisingly very high quality of the broadcast, technically as much as the content, which in itself meant it set a new benchmark (as much for podcasts in general as for Celtic podcasts).

Very highly recommended.

Videocast

On Jan 22 2010, they created a little bit of Celtic history by having the first live internet recording of the podcast live on camera via Twitter (Podcast 31). Viewers were able to watch as the compères Chris and Jamie call Gerard Dale (Treasurer of the Calgary Celtic Supporters Club) and discuss all the goings on in the world of Celtic. Fellow supporters were invited to watch and listen to the chat live and contribute to the proceedings via tweets on the site.

A great idea, however it was probably a little too ahead of its time as demand wasn’t yet strong or high enough for a live Vodcast, more for podcasts. Maybe in time this will be revived.

Playing For The LostBhoys

On May 20 2010, David Harper – one of the LostBhoys bloggers – put together a compilation book of blogs and articles written by a number of the LostBhoys contributors, chronicling Season 2009-10 through the eyes of the fans. It was titled Playing For The Lostbhoys (2010). The book was released through Lulu.com, both in print and as a digital download, with all of the profits going to The Good Child Foundation – a charity in which a former LostBhoys podcast guest, Paul Lennon, is heavily involved.

Since then it has become an annual creation, and we hope it can carry on to be a tradition forever more. A wonderful addition to the whole Celtic media community in print now as much as in digital.
