Ryan Conroy was recruited to the Celtic Pro Youth Academy as an 11 year old. He was taken on by the club at the start of 2003/04 season and moved steadily up though the squads. During 2004/05 he was a constant member of the U19 team. In 2005/06 he was given a first team squad number and was a Scotland U19 player. He made his first representative appearance for the club in a Friendly in September 2005 against Arbroath.
Conroy had an excellent left foot and can play anywhere on the left side. He was regularly used as an attacking left back. He made his full debut against Falkirk in December 2007 in a straight forward 4-0 victory, but Conroy was well received with his performance deemed by some of the support as one of the best seen in a while which was a positive sign.
However, he played in the next game – a dreadful capitulation from 2-0 up against 10-man Inverness CT – and was returned to the reserves thereafter.
He captained the reserves in 2009/10 for a series of ad hoc friendly fixtures, the reserve league having been discontinued.
He won a further outing for Celtic in a 1-0 defeat by St Mirren in the cup in 2009, but as Conroy was subbed on very late in the game he was hardly culpable for the result. Celtic did go on the next week to defeat Rangers in the league cup final, but Conroy was not involved. Celtic were going through a difficult time as Strachan’s reign was declining rapidly, and then the next season was to become a shambles under Mowbray with Neil Lennon then taking over.
He was loaned to Patrick Thistle on 14 January 2010, where he played 15 league games during the second half of the season. He returned to Celtic at the end of the season, and was loaned out again at the start of the following season (2010/11). This loan spell was with Queen of the South where he scored 3 goals in 11 appearances. The loan spell expired at the end of December 2010, and once again Conroy returned to Celtic.
No further first team appearances for Celtic would materialise and on 21 June 2011, Dundee FC announced they had signed him on a permanent basis.
We wished him the best.
He helped Dundee to the Scottish Championship league title (second tier) and so promotion to the top tier, but was to be very well travelled in Scotland with stints across various clubs. He appears to have hung up his playing boots in 2022 after some seasons with Peterhead.
