Gorbals born Brian Coyne came from a Celtic mad family and achieved a life time’s ambition by signing for Celtic in late 1977.
He was a product of Celtic Boys Club and was farmed out to St.Roch’s before joining up at Parkhead.
Brian Coyne made just the one appearance, coming on as a substitute on 17th April 1978 (in a rare Monday night game) when he replaced Mike Conroy in a 5-2 victory over Clydebank at Celtic Park. Clydebank were already relegated by this stage, so offered no real challenge, and only 7000 turned up at Celtic Park for this match. Coyne became the last ever Celtic player to be given a team debut by Jock Stein before his departure in the summer of 1978. Clydebank had actually beaten Celtic a couple of weeks back 3-2 at their home ground, so this match result wasn’t a certainty, as well as that Celtic had been cuffed 4-1 v Hibs away two days earlier in the match beforehand.
It was a nightmare of a season, Jock Stein’s last, in which Celtic finished very poorly. So no easy place for any aspiring player to make a name for himself.
Sadly, Brian incurred a bad injury in the 1978/79 season, and new Celtic manager Billy McNeill released him in 1979.
Brian Coyne went on to play for Shrewsbury, Motherwell and Falkirk, and had a notable period as manager of Welsh club Newtown in the 1990’s. He later had managerial spells with Cwmbran Town & Aberstwyth Town.
At time of writing, he is still based in Wales.

BRIAN Coyne left Newtown in the summer of 2003 after a decade in charge at Latham Park and, to the surprise of many, joined Cwmbran as manager.
He came into the club at a difficult time, after the sad death of Tony Wilcox, but after a slow start has gradually built the Crows into a team contending for the top eight.
He guided Newtown to the runners-up spot in the League of Wales and into European competition.
Brian’s teams have a reputation for playing football and producing outstanding talents such as Andy Cooke and Scott Ruscoe.
Coyne, who has also managed the Welsh semi-professional squad, quit the club in October 2005 following the cash crisis and was swiftly appointed manager at Park Avenue when David Burrows decided to quit.

Midfielder, Brian Coyne was born in Glasgow in December 1959, his football career started with St Roch before being called up by Celtic aged only seventeen. His Bhoys debut came soon afterwards, but unlucky for him he broke his ankle later that season and he was unable to sustain the breakthrough at Parkhead. He then took his talents elsewhere and he ended up at Shrewsbury Town in June 1979, but he was only able to count one appearance for the Shrews before coming back north to join the Steelmen. With the mighty ‘Well he fared better and he won a First Division Championship medal in 1982. He made only 35 appearances before leaving the club. He later served Worcester City as a player and Newtown of Wales as a player/manager.
