Outside-left Jimmy Crozier signed for Celtic in August 1928 from English side Hull City. He was thought to be the “Bargain buy of the year at £50” on signing, although he had little played for Hull City. It wasn’t to be a successful time at Celtic.
The Milton-born player made his debut in a 2-1 league win at home to Dundee on 29th December 1928 filling in for Denis McCallum.
He was to make only one other first team league appearance, the following match which was a disastrous 3-0 defeat to Rangers on Ne’er Day in 1929, after which Denis McCallum returned to the first team. Celtic then went on a long unbeaten run, which also hindered any opportunities for another place in the first team. Match conditions were said to be ‘freakish’ due to the weather on the day.
In fairness to Jimmy Crozier you have to see his time in light of the competition. Rangers in season 1928/29 were miles ahead of everyone else in the league, and won the title by 16pts, which was quite a record when you add in that wins were awarded only 2pts back in those days (as against 3pts in the modern game). Rangers also way outscored every other side with a mean defence, one of the most successful sides to have ever won the league title in any era in Scotland. Celtic still finished second in the race for the title.
Add in the declining state of management at Celtic, and poor circumstances, then it all hindered his opportunities too.
After several loan spells at various clubs he finally departed Celtic on a full time basis to Derry City in July 1929.
He later returned to Glasgow, and owned a wee shop in Maitland Street, Glasgow.
