BiogDavidson, James - Pic

Celtic signed outside-right James Davidson from Leith Athletic in 1892, and the player went on to make his debut for the Bhoys in a 2-2 league draw at Rangers on 24th September 1892.

He enjoyed an impressive debut season as Celtic won the championship for the very first time, and was inside-left to Johnny Campbell in this side.

He played his part well including scoring against Rangers in a 2-2 draw, which in light of the tightness of the league title decision (title won by Celtic by 1pt over Rangers), this was in reflection as vital a goal as many others. He also scored doubles in games against Leith Athletic and Dumbarton which helped propel the side to victory. He was though only played in and out the side for various runs during the season.

However, he was to lose his place in the team to the great Johnny Madden the next season after a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Rangers early in the season, and thereafter played only the odd game.

In his last season, he had a fine record of playing in five league wins out of five, including scoring a double in what must have been a pulsating match when Celtic defeated Leith Athletic 6-5 away in Edinburgh.

In his time at Celtic, James Davidson played 22 league and Scottish Cup matches for Celtic and scored 10 goals, a very fine record.

He left for Burnley in July 1895 where he went on to be a popular player.

He married a coachman’s daughter, Mary Jessie McFadden in 1899, and later moved back to Scotland, living at Sandy Rd in Renfrew.

James Davidson passed away in January 1929.
