BiogDawson, Danny - Pic

Larkhall-born half-back Danny Dawson was a gutsy player whose Celtic career suffered through a knee injury.

It was said of him that “A more whole-hearted player does not exist“, and that he was a player “who sent Parkhead fans into ecstasies with his whole-hearted display“.

Signed from Larkhall Thistle on 4th June 1932, Dawson made his debut in a league clash with Queens Park at Parkhead on 30th September 1933 in which the Bhoys won 3-1.

Understudy to Peter Wilson and then Chic Geatons, Dawson was an able and committed deputy but in February 1935 he suffered a knee injury in a cup tie with Partick Thistle that kept him out of the game for over a year. He had only finally recently managed to get a good run of games in Celtic’s side at this point. It also lost him a place in the league title winning side of 1935-36.

He was to suffer further knee problems in 1937, and it was to shorten his Celtic career playing little for the first team thereafter. His last game was in the victorious Glasgow Charity Cup final v Queen’s Park in May 1937.

Incredibly, he scored all his three goals in his Celtic career in his final two matches for Celtic in April 1937: one v Dunfermline (4-3 win) in his penultimate match then another in his final match v Arbroath (5-1 win). Some records state he scored twice v Arbroath in that match but the match reports from the day (The Scotsman and Glasgow Herald) state he only scored once.

After 20 league & Scottish Cup appearances with three goals for the Celts, he left for Queen of the South in 1938. He wound down his career thereafter in time after loans with Hamilton Accies and Third Lanark.

For a Celt said to have been so whole-hearted, it’s sad that he was to leave the club with no major silverware, his injuries losing him the opportunities to play in title winning sides just as Celtic had turned a corner under assistant manager Jimmy McMenemy.

It is believed that he may have moved to Canada: Winnipeg Tribute (16 June 1945) – “Danny Dawson, former Glasgow Celtic ace, has signed with King Edward of the Major League“. [Needs confirmed all correct… see http://celticgraves.com/topic/9629570/1/?x=50]
