Biog

This pacey Venezuelan was acquired by the Barnes/Dalglish management team on a free transfer from Crystal Palace (his agent was Ian Wright) and initially came as one of many fly-by-night triallists that season.

He had been playing in the rarefied environs of Hong Kong before offering the cash-strapped ‘Eagles’ his services for expenses only. However after a friendly against Bayern Munich in February 2000, he moved to Celtic making two substitution appearances later in the season after sorting out his registration and work permit obligations by claiming Portuguese nationality.

He played in two draws at home in the league (coming on both times as a sub): 2-2 with Dundee & 1-1 with Hibs. Jonathan Gould in goals had a poor game in the 2-2 game, losing a goal by throwing the ball into his own net.

Two disappointing results, but in fairness, this was at the tail-end of the disastrous Barnes/Dalglish season when the side’s morale was at the bottom of the barrel. No easy environment to step in to make a mark.

He never won a full 90 minute appearance for Celtic, and continued the then curious repeat difficulty for Latin American players to settle down & make a success of a career in football in Scotland.

Post-Celtic
He subsequently departed at the end of the season and returned to Venezuela. He soon returned to the UK and was picked up by QPR on a short term contract but released to Portuguese club Maritimo in the Madeira islands. After a spell there he also appears to have had another spell with his previous Hong Kong club before pitching up with FC Nurnberg in Germany where again he didn’t stay long. He left for a Cypriot club managing a season there before moving on a free transfer to Norwegian side Odd Grenland. This nomadic existence earned him the nickname “world trotter” in Venezuela.

He played for Odd Grenland as a valued member of the side until 2008. Went back to Venezuela but his wife & son (Fernando Jr) failed to settle during his brief spells with Monagas SC and Atletico Zulia, and he was soon back in Norway with second division Mjøndalen.

Meanwhile, his strong Christian faith had led him to become a trainee pastor – when not energetically patrolling the right wing berth of Norwegian football grounds. He went on to become a pastor in a Norwegian free church.

He may not have achieved much of note at Celtic, but with his national side, he was a Copa America Quarter Finalist with Venezuela in 2007. A great achievement taking in that Venezuela is the only large country in South America not football daft (baseball is their national game).

Fernando was quite a journeyman and through his career he played for around 16 teams. Now he was settled in Europe, having found his life in the church.  Respect to him.

Tuvo un paso fugaz por el Celtic durante la también corta etapa de John Barnes y Kenny Dalglish en la temporada 1999/2000, pero fue el primer jugador venezolano que vistió la camiseta verdiblanca con 23 años. Fernando de Ornelas abrió la puerta para que jugadores como Miku aterrizaran años después en Glasgow. Aprovechando que la página ha llegado a las 100.000 visitas y que otro vinotinto acaba de firmar por el club, Fernando nos atiende desde Noruega para una breve charla sobre su trayectoria en el mundo del fútbol.

En su lista de equipos como futbolista y entrenador se incluyen, además del Celtic: Marítimo, Unión Atlético Táchira, Happy Vallley, Crystal Palace, Slovan Bratislava, South China, Queens Park Rangers, Marítimo de Portugal, Gansu Tianma, Nuremberg, Olympiakos Nicosia, Odd Grenland, Monagas, Zulia, Mjøndalen, Gulset, Hei y Urædd. La primera pregunta que debemos hacerte es obligada, ¿qué tipo de jugador era Fernando de Ornelas?

Yo era un jugador que se me caracterizaba por mi velocidad y por eso me desempeñaba como delantero o media punta, ahí fue donde jugué más.

Llegaste al Celtic procedente del Crystal Palace en el año 2000 cuando la temporada ya estaba bien avanzada, ¿qué fue lo primero que te llamó la atención sobre el club?

Bueno, la verdad es que fue especial llegar al Celtic, ya que en ese momento todavía estaba John Barnes como técnico y verlo a él en persona me causó mucha impresión, al igual que a Henrik Larsson, Ian Wright, Mark Viduka…figuras que yo veía por la televisión y ahora estaba compartiendo con ellos el día a día. También el hecho de que el club había ganado una Champions League.

Para ganarte un contrato en Escocia primero estuviste a prueba y eso permitió medirte ante el Bayern de Múnich en un encuentro amistoso en el que lo hiciste muy bien, ¿qué recuerdos tienes de aquél partido?

Bueno, fueron muchas cosas que viví ese momento, por ejemplo ver a Lothar Matthaus en persona me impactó mucho…ver el público del Celtic también me impresionó, el estadio…fueron muchas cosas.

Después jugaste dos partidos como suplente y pronto acabó tu estancia en un Celtic que por aquellos tiempos no tenía mucha estabilidad, ¿con qué te quedas de tu paso por Celtic Park? ¿Algún jugador en concreto te impresionó más que el resto?

Fue una experiencia inolvidable de haber compartido vestuario con gran jugadores y entrenadores como Kenny Dalglish. Lo que me impresionó fue Henrik Larsson y su humildad.

Luego tu trayectoria te llevó hasta una gran cantidad de países como Hong Kong, Portugal, China, Alemania, Chipre…¿porqué decidiste emprender tantas aventuras en el extranjero?

Fueron lugares en los que se me abrieron las puertas y en cada una de ellas aprendí cosas diferentes, tanto en lo deportivo como en lo privado, así que no creo que fuesen aventuras, sino que todos esos equipos me dejaron muchas cosas en lo deportivo como por ejemplo amigos.

Como ex jugador de la Vinotinto, eres miembro de una generación que empezó a sembrar la pasión por el fútbol allá y presenciaste el cambio del fútbol venezolano en los últimos 15 años, ¿a qué crees que se debe? ¿Cómo calificarías los éxitos recientes en la Copa América?

Todo es trabajo y lo que pasó fue que empezamos a creer en el talento que hay en el jugador venezolano. Nos mentalizamos de que sí se podía sacar buenos resultados, fue un cambio mental y ahí empezaron a venir los resultados y la motivación de seguir creciendo. Todo es producto y resultado del trabajo y creer en el talento que Dios nos ha dado.

Ahora llega al Celtic el segundo venezolano en su historia, el delantero Miku, que precisamente te mencionó en la primera entrevista que hizo en Escocia. ¿Qué crees que puede aportar al Celtic? ¿Ves la adaptación a otro país un problema?

Creo que Miku puede aportar mucho, es jugador goleador y muy trabajador. Además, es un jugador de equipo, sé que va aportar mucho.

Finalmente, te tenemos que preguntar sobre tu vida en Noruega. Entrenas a un equipo de las divisiones inferiores del país nórdico y diriges un proyecto llamado El Gol de tu Vida, ¿nos puedes explicar algo más?

Bueno, ahora soy pastor de jóvenes en la iglesia The Way y entrenador de un equipo de cuarta división aquí en Noruega. También trabajo como asistente en un kindergarden deportivo con niños y soy actualmente director y fundador de El Gol de Tu Vida, que se basa en unir a todos los jugadores que han marcado el gol de su vida, tener a Jesús como su señor y Salvador, que den testimonio de lo que significa servir a Jesús y compartir a los jóvenes en especial eso que Dios ha hecho en sus vidas. El año pasado tuvimos a Ze Roberto, jugador brasileño famoso, ex Bayern de Múnich, que estuvo compartiendo toda su vida tanto profesional como espiritual con nosotros.

A Fernando de Ornelas se le conoce como “El Trotamundos”, debido a que desarrolló su carrera a lo largo y ancho del mundo, en al menos nueve países. Abrió muchas puertas. Fue el primer venezolano que migró del balompié europeo al asiático en dos oportunidades. Por algo es el segundo vinotinto con mayor número de clubes en los que ha jugado, por detrás de Ricardo David Páez.

Su trayectoria como delantero es de 20 años. Luego de jugar en Venezuela con Maritimo (1993-1996 y 1997) y Deportivo Táchira (1996), en 1998 vivió su primera experiencia internacional con el Happy Valley, de Hong Kong, cuando tenía 22 años de edad. Fue difícil vivir en medio de la soledad, admite, extrañaba comer con sus padres en la misma mesa.
Fue muy duro vivir solo en la otra parte del mundo, hablamos de casi 12 horas de diferencia con respecto a Venezuela; aprender a madurar, tener que hacerme mi propia comida, salir a comprar o hacer diligencias solo, fue muy marcante. Fue el precio que uno tuvo que pagar en ese momento para estar en el extranjero, pero al mismo tiempo formu00f3 mi caru00e1cter. El hombre de tez blanca y nariz redonda es elocuente, expresivo y empático a la hora de responder. Son muchas razones por las que hizo vida en tantas naciones, dice. Luego de haber estado un año en Hong Kong, donde fue goleador y quedó campeón, se mudó para el Crystal Palace, que en ese momento se encontraba en la segunda división de Inglaterra.

“El Crystal Palace estaba pasando por un problema económico muy complicado, a tal punto de que iba a quebrar; por esto tuve que tomar la decisión de irme al Celtic, en Escocia. Luego hubo cambio de entrenador, con un nuevo sistema y nuevos jugadores, y tuve que cambiar de equipo nuevamente. Entonces fueron diferentes situaciones que causaron que yo tuviera que cambiar de equipo y de países”, detalla.

A pesar de que jugó pocos partidos, su etapa en el Celtic fue uno de los períodos más especiales de su vida. No solo tuvo la oportunidad de ser dirigido por Kenny Dalglish —leyenda británica que alzó tres veces la Copa de Europa con el Liverpool— y de compartir vestuarios con Henrik Larsson —goleador sueco y campeón de la Champions League con el Barcelona— sino que también conoció a Andreína, quien se convirtió en su esposa.

En el año 2000 se probó con el Slovan Bratislava, de Bulgaria, pero en 2001 regresó a Hong Kong, donde jugó para el South China. Ese mismo año retornó a Inglaterra para fichar por el Queens Park Rangers, institución en la que también vio poca acción.

A su mente llega su pasantu00eda en el Club Sport Maru00edtimo (2002), de Portugal, donde tuvo la oportunidad de coincidir con el venezolano Danny Alves, quien representu00f3 a la selecciu00f3n de Portugal en el Mundial Sudu00e1frica 2010, y con Ku00e9pler Laveru00e1n Lima Ferreira, mejor conocido como Pepe.

“Mi etapa en Portugal fue muy linda, debido a que se cumplió el sueño especial de mi papá, quien es portugués: jugar con el Marítimo de Venezuela y el de Portugal. Nunca pensé que, después de un tiempo, vería a Pepe con la camiseta del Real Madrid. Fue muy lindo saber que pudimos disfrutar una temporada juntos”, recuerda con nostalgia.

Su tercer periplo en el fútbol asiático se dio ese mismo año, con el Gansu Tianma de la segunda división china. “La cultura asiática se diferencia mucho a la nuestra. La comida es muy diferente a lo que nosotros estamos acostumbrados”, infiere.

Fernando de Ornelas se crió en un hogar católico. Relata que en su juventud cumplía con la regla de ir todos los domingos a misa para estar en contacto con Dios. Sin embargo, el resto de los días hacía lo que le daba la gana: salía a fiestas, consumía bebidas alcohólicas y fumaba cigarrillo; hábitos que, según su criterio, destruían su vida profesional y personal.

Durante su estadía con el Marítimo de Madeira, él y su esposa estaban pasando por un momento complicado en la relación, hasta llegaron a vivir separados, pero los dos recibieron con los brazos abiertos al Señor Jesucristo y asegura que así salvaron el matrimonio. Sus vidas cambiaron de forma radical, comenta.
Nuestras vidas dieron un giro de 180u00b0, en nuestras decisiones y en nuestras prioridades. Asu00ed como Jesu00fas cambiu00f3 el agua en vino, u00e9l cambiu00f3 todos esos malos hu00e1bitos en amor, felicidad y paz en nuestro matrimonio. Por eso mi esposa y yo iniciamos una relaciu00f3n constante con u00e9l desde 2002, en la que tenemos una comunicaciu00f3n activa, no una relaciu00f3n de un domingo o de una reuniu00f3n de oraciu00f3n. “El Trotamundos” hizo maletas en 2003 para Alemania, donde jugó en la segunda categoría con el FC Núremberg. En ese momento conoció a un pastor que le hizo saber que el Señor lo necesitaba para algo más; no solo para jugar fútbol, sino también para ser un instrumento que compartiera su palabra. Por eso se dedicó a servir en la iglesia cristiana como pastor.

“Siempre habrá personas que van a criticar la religión, porque nunca vamos a poder cumplir con toda la gracia del Señor. Ya todo fue hecho, ya todos nuestros pecados fueron pagados por Jesús en la cruz. Nosotros lo que tenemos que hacer es creer y aceptar ese regalo, pero también tenemos que confesarlo. Por eso tenemos que tener claro que la religión en sí siempre va a traer polémica o discusión”, opina.

Participación con la Vinotinto

Para el Fernando de Ornelas es difícil elegir cuál fue la etapa que más disfrutó como futbolista. Fueron muchas ligas en las que hizo vida, pero en esta oportunidad decide enfocarse en la que, bajo su consideración, es con la que todo futbolista venezolano sueña: representar a la Vinotinto.

El ex delantero integró aquella selección que apodaban como “La Cenicienta”, cuando la dirigía José Pastoriza, y luego formó parte del “Boom Vinotinto” que comandó Richard Páez. “Lo que uno siembra es lo que cosecha, pero sin duda que el que más cosechó fue el profesor Richard Páez”, complementa.

El caraqueño disputó 30 partidos y agitó las redes en cinco oportunidades con la Vinotinto, de acuerdo con la web Transfermarkt. Fue el encargado de darle el primer triunfo a Venezuela frente a una selección europea en el viejo continente, cuando derrotó 1-0 a Austria en un cuadrangular amistoso que se disputó en Suiza, previo a la Copa América de 2007.

“Uno de los momentos que más me marcó en mi carrera fue jugar en la Copa América que se efectuó en Venezuela, en 2007. Fue uno de los sueños que el Señor me permitió vivir; también los años como futbolista que viví en Noruega, donde hice muchos goles y dejé el nombre de Venezuela muy en alto”, manifiesta con entusiasmo.

Vida en Noruega

Fernando de Ornelas tiene 15 años establecido en Noruega con su familia. Sus primeros seis meses en la nación nórdica fueron difíciles, admite, pero después empezó a jugar de manera regular y marcar goles.

Debido a sus buenas presentaciones, se ganó el cariño de los fanáticos. “Se tomó mucho aprecio a mi familia, y eso nos dio muchas facilidades de acostumbrarnos a la vida en Noruega”, agrega.

Explica que viajó a Venezuela con su familia para que sus hijos tuvieran la oportunidad de conocer el país donde nacieron sus padres. En ese momento jugó para Monagas Sport Club (2008) y Zulia FC (2009). No obstante, considera que no le fue bien en su retorno al balompié venezolano.
Mi esposa y yo sentimos paz en el corazu00f3n cuando regresamos a Noruega, despuu00e9s de un tiempo corto en Venezuela. Vimos que el plan que Dios tenu00eda para nosotros no era allu00e1, sino en Noruega. Esa era la decisiu00f3n que tomamos. No fue fu00e1cil decirle a nuestros padres que volveru00edamos a mudarnos a un pau00eds para empezar desde cero. A pesar de que fue campeón como entrenador en la tercera y cuarta división noruega, justifica que abandonó los banquillos en el ámbito profesional en vista de la pasión por servir a Jesucristo, de poder transmitir la palabra de Dios y en cómo puede impactar en las vidas del ser humano.

“Todavía sigo ligado al fútbol, aunque de una manera no profesional. De alguna u otra forma estoy en contacto con el club donde jugué y estoy como entrenador de forma voluntaria en un equipo donde hay jóvenes de 15-16 años, ahí está mi hijo. Tengo la posibilidad de usar eso como canales para compartir los valores y principios bíblicos”, declara.

Mientras cumple con el aislamiento preventivo en Noruega, debido a la pandemia del Covid-19, el caraqueu00f1o confiesa que extrau00f1a Venezuela. La u00faltima vez que estuvo en el pau00eds fue en 2019 para fundar una iglesia en Maturu00edn, luego de siete au00f1os sin haberlo visitado.

“A pesar de que no me quiero enfocar en la política porque no viví en Venezuela en estos últimos años, es doloroso ver lo que está viviendo mi país. En estos momentos, para los venezolanos que estamos de este lado del mundo, lo que nos toca es orar; clamarle al Señor que en algún momento pueda darle una solución”, expresa.

Fernando de Ornelas predicó la palabra de Dios en el terreno de juego, ahora lo hace desde un estrado. Sostiene que ponerse la camiseta de Jesucristo fue el gol de su vida, y es que la esencia de lo que está dentro de su corazón es transmitir los principios de la biblia y tratar de enseñar que hay un camino. “Ese camino se llama Jesucristo”, culmina con una sonrisa.
