Celtic Graves Society commemorate Mick Dunbar this Sunday

This Sunday, the Celtic Graves Society will host a special event to commemorate the final resting place of Mick Dunbar, who played in Celtic’s first ever match, on May 28, 1888 and went on to become a Celtic director in 1897 until his death in 1921.
Mick Dunbar is one of the pivotal figures in the foundation and establishment of Celtic, on and off the field.
The commemoration marks the return of a full programme of events planned by the Celtic Graves Society for this year and beyond, following the forced lay-off of the past two years.
Despite the logistical challenges in the Covid period, the Celtic Graves Society still managed to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Johnny Thomson’s passing with the hugely successful pilgrimage last year from Celtic Park to Cardenden.
The Mick Dunbar commemoration also sees the return to St Peter’s Dalbeth, where so many Celtic greats and Founding Fathers of the club lie at rest.
The commemoration ceremony will take place at St Peter’s Cemetery, Dalbeth, 1900 London Rd, Glasgow G32 8TX on Sunday, August 21 at 12pm (prior to the home fixture v Hearts)
There will be a number of special guest speakers at the event, including members of the Dunbar family and representatives of Celtic Football Club.
Mick Dunbar
Mick Dunbar played in that first ever Celtic game, a 5-2 defeat of Rangers. He made 32 appearances for Celtic, scoring 10 goals in total, including a hat trick on September 22, 1888 in the 8-0 defeat of Cowlairs in the Scottish Cup (only our second ever Scottish Cup tie).
Mick played a significant role in rapidly establishing Celtic as a major force on the pitch in our early years. He eventually lost his place in the Celtic team to the great Sandy McMahon but the recruitment of players of that calibre was only possible through the efforts on the pitch of the likes of Mick Dunbar, in making Celtic a force to be reckoned with in Scottish football.
With the end of his playing days looming, Mick became a member of the Celtic Committee, then an original member of the first board as a Celtic director in 1897, and held that role until his death in September 1921.
The legendary Willie Maley, a fellow Cathcart man and team-member from that first match, spoke fondly of Mick, after those early games, and said: “Mr Dunbar and I were, after that, particular chums”
All Celtic supporters are invited to attend the Celtic Graves Society event this Sunday to commemorate Mick’s final resting place, which has been restored ahead of this commemoration. It is sure to be another very special Celtic occasion.
