BiogDuncan, Willie - The Celtic Wiki

Condorrat-born keeper Willie Duncan played nine times for Celtic while on loan from Airdrie. He was loaned by the Bhoys in March 1910 after regular custodian Davy Adams went down with pneumonia.

He made his debut in a 2-0 league win at home to Third Lanark on 16th March 1910, and kept the role for the next nine matches. The big keeper impressed on that day and he certainly played his part during the remainder of his stay in helping the Bhoys claim their then record sixth championship title in succession.

He had a remarkable record in his short stint, with 6 shut-outs in his 9 league matches, which saw Celtic win six games and only lose once.

Despite a fine record in goals deputising for Davy Adams, he was to lose the place back to Davy Adams who resumed his role as first choice in the following season (1910-11). Willie Duncan’s only appearance that season was in the Glasgow Cup final in Oct 1910 which Celtic lost 3-1 to Rangers.

He returned to Airdrie at the end of the 1910-11 season and later went on to be a fine performer for St Mirren.

Later moved to the US, and he went on to play for and coach sides there. He won the US National Championship with Bethlehem Steel in 1917-18, and by 1922 was playing at Fall River.
