Having reviewed Lord of the Wing I expected there to be a lot of duplication between the 2 but other than obviously the footballing clips there was very little crossover. This DVD compliments Lord of the Wing perfectly.
Like Lord of the Wing Billy Connolly is the narrator and you can feel his love and admiration for Jinky coming through as he takes us through his story. The opening sequence is Jinky’s cortege heading down Kerrydale Street where thousands are gathered to pay their last respects to a man who brought joy to so many. I was there that day and although it was an emotional day the spontaneous outbursts of clapping and singing turned it into a celebration and one I think Jinky would have loved.
The DVD is largely made up of interview footage Jinky did with Jim Craig in 2004 and an interview done at Celtic Park in 1999. The difference between the 2 Jinky’s is stark. There are also extended highlights of games Jinky was involved in. A number of them are extension of the clips we have seen a million times before but others are just clips of Jinky doing his magic that maybe didn’t end in a goal. The talking heads are much less in this DVD but it is good to see Jinky’s wife Agnes get some air time. Very much an unsung hero as she nursed Jinky until his last breathe.
Also on this DVD another unsung hero in Willie Haughey the man Jinky said saved his life. His intervention and patience allowed Jinky to get his life back on track until he was diagnosed with Motor Nuerone Disease. This was the one opponent Jinky couldn’t beat although he did his best and through his efforts his legacy in years to come may be a cure for this horrible disease.
The funeral footage along with film of the Lions back at Celtic Park and the thousands that lined the streets to say goodbye to the Greatest Ever Celt are testament to how much the wee man was loved.
As he made his final journey from Celtic Park down Kerrydale Street onto London Road I’ll admit to shedding a tear or two, you’d be a hard man not to, and I wasn’t alone. His adoring public had turned out to say one final goodbye.
He was the Greatest Ever Celt and we should be eternally grateful that he wore the hoops.
