After winning the European Cup the previous season – THE first British team and North European team to do so – Celtic's involvement in the European Cup was short and sweet this season, going out in the First Round. They met Dynamo Kiev.

- This was the first year that away goals were used to decide the result if an aggregate was tied. However this was ONLY for the First Round.
- The general closeness of the ties in both the First and Second Rounds
- Benfica, losing finalists only scraping through on away goals to Glentoran
