Biog
An accomplished junior player with Jordanhill Juniors, John Ferguson had the briefest of Celtic careers, making just a solitary league appearance for the Bhoys.
He had made a name for himself after scoring all four goals for Junior Scotland v Ireland in Belfast on 9 Feb 1895.
The Jordanhill Juniors youngster was fielded as a trialist in the league clash with Leith Athletic in March 1895 which Celtic won 6-5. Playing as a centre forward, John Ferguson – who had taken the place of the injured Johnny Madden – grabbed a goal (Celtic’s sixth) in what appears from the scoreline at least to have been an exciting game, it was 4-4 at half-time so John Ferguson’s goal appeared to have sealed the result (Leith scored their fifth at the death).
John Ferguson also scored for the Bhoys in a friendly against St Mirren but despite his efforts he was not offered a contract and he eventually joined Hibernian (the new resuscitated club). Whether it was partially due to the victory over their near neighbours in Leith we do not know.
John Ferguson also played for Blackburn Rovers for a short period in between playing for Celtic and Hibernian.
He was to play at centre in a Hibs side that beat Celtic 4-2 at home when they unfurled their Division 2 Championship flag at half-time (24 Aug 1895). It was a double flag raising time for Edinburgh as Hearts had won the top tier league title the season before too. However, in season 1895-96, it was the Glasgow pair of Celtic & Rangers to finish top with Hibs & Heart behind them (all in that order), with Celtic winning the league title.
He later played for Third Lanark and Partick Thistle. Seemed to never settle for long at most of his clubs until he landed at Partick Thistle where records show he finally settled there for a 3 year stretch.
