Biog
Dundonian Ferry joined Celtic at 15 and was the midfield playmaker in an exceptional youth team which won back-to-back doubles in 04-05 and 05-06. His creative qualities seemed to complement those of Charlie Grant perfectly and the duo were part of a large Celtic presence in the Scotland U19 team which narrowly lost the 2006 European final.
That was after Ferry signed a four and a half year contract extension in January 2006. By that that time an impressed Strachan already had him training with the first team. He also featured in the 2006 close-season friendlies, debuting against Legia Warsaw, and seemed poised for a breakthrough.
Sadly his progress was derailed by a persistent ankle injury which saw him miss out on the 2007 U20 World Cup and left him fighting for his career. After numerous false-dawns it was not until spring 2009 that Ferry came back. He blasted a title-clinching goal for the reserves and was called back into the first-team squad by Strachan.
After featuring in pre-Season friendlies under Mowbray, Ferry took the opportunity of joining Ben Hutchinson on a six-month loan to Swindon Town. Already at the club were Scott Cuthbert, the defensive rock of Ferry’s all-conquering youth team, and another ex-Celt Jon Paul McGovern. While Hutchinson flopped, Ferry became a key man in Wiltshire and extended his loan until the end of 2009-10. They reached the play-off final at Wembley despite Ferry putting through his own goal in the semi. He made over 40 appearances, laying to rest any lingering doubts over his fitness.
He returned to Celtic and featured in pre-season friendlies, this time under Neil Lennon. However, in Aug 2010 he made a transfer to Swindon after a successful £350,000 double bid for himself and Paul Caddis. He then moved onto a nubmer of sides, with little success, but had a long career at Peterhead.
He admitted in later interviews, his failings in effort in training & commitment that hindered his opportunities to make it at Celtic.
Post-Football
He may not have had a Celtic career but he was football obsessesed, and alongside his job at the Royal Mail, he started on podcasting, on “Open Goals: Keeping the Ball in the Ground”, a cross Scottish football podcast.
The success of this led to a full-time Scottish social media career, with the successful “Si Ferry Meets…” YouTube channel, as well as some big events in major venues, interviewing some notable names in the game.
He never lost his Celtic roots, and played in front of 48,000 supporters for a ‘Celtic Legends’ select side at Anfield v their Liverpool counterparts in a charity match in March 2023.
