John Geddes was a full-back who signed for the Bhoys as a teenager in October 1927 after impressing with hometown side Lochgelly Celtic:
“A stalwart back… of high reputation”.
John Geddes was 18 when he made his debut in a 1-1 league draw with Aberdeen at Parkhead on February 25 1928 when he stood in for Willie McStay who was on international duty with Scotland. Tom Sinclair was also debuting that day.
He made just one further appearance that season which saw Celtic lose 3-0 to Raith Rovers (final league game of the season). This was also Tom Sinclair’s second and last game for Celtic coincidentally. This poor result didn’t help his case, but the league had already been lost to Rangers.
This was the end of the run for John Geddes and he never appeared for the Celtic first team again. Additionally, Celtic’s challenge for the major honours had begun to slip. Having been a force over the first quarter of the century, Celtic had now hit a rut would not have a recovery for a few years to come.
He joined Gillingham in 1929, and then moved onto a number of clubs including Rhyl (Wales, 1930), Tunbridge Wells Rangers (1932), Bolton Wanderers (trial, Aug 1933), Rotherham Utd (trial, Sep 1933), and Newry Town (Sep 1935). So in effect he was quite a journeyman footballer.
