He had previously worked as GK coach at Blackburn Rovers (1991-1997) and Newcastle Utd (1997-1999). It was Kenny Dalglish’s personal knowledge of Terry’s coaching ability at both Blackburn and Newcastle which made him the stand out favourite for the position at Celtic once Peter Latchford was sacked as goalkeeping coach at the end of the 1998-99 season.
In 1999-00 season Terry had his work cut out. Not only were there three keepers vying for the first team spot – Jonathon Gould, Stewart Kerr and Dmitri Kharine – but there were also the sub-first team keepers in Barry John Corr, Jim Gallagher, Alan Morrison.
Terry survived the sacking of John Barnes on 10th February, 2000 following the disaster against Inverness Caledonian Thistle and continued to work for Celtic under the managership of Martin O’Neill. He left Celtic along with the rest of O’Neill’s backroom staff at the end of the 2004-05 season when Martin O’Neill stood down. Gordon Strachan subsequently brought in Jim Blyth as goalkeeping coach.
Playing career:
Terry enjoyed a long playing career as a professional but started from the humble background of Sunday football playing for a local Shrewsbury side Bricklayers Sports. He was offered a YTS place by Shrewsbury Town but chose to go to college where he qualified as a Physical Education teacher. Whilst playing part-time he was scouted by Bury, joining them for two years before moving to Halifax Town. He transferred to Southampton in 1978 before moving to Blackburn Rovers, after a short loan spell with Crysatl Palace. He had 10 productive years at Ewood Park followed by a further seven years as a goalkeeping coach there before a contract dispute saw him move to Newcastle.

Post Celtic Career:
Terry left the club at the end of the 2004-05 season. He had a season out of the game before taking up the Goalkeeping Coach post at Newcastle Utd on 4th July 2006. He was forced to retire from coaching due to a long standing back problem on 24th October, 2007 at the age of 54. He has since retired to Spain where he lives quite contentedly.
However in 2011, the warmth had clearly worked on Gennoe's back and he returned to full time coaching at Aston Villa where he currently (2015) continues.
