BiogGilhooley, Michael - The Celtic Wiki

Michael Gilhooley was a Scottish professional footballer, who played as a centre-half. He never made it at Celtic but had found success elsewhere and represented Scotland once at international level.

Born in Edinburgh, Gilhooley was on the books for Celtic, but didn't ever get to play for the first team in one of the main competitions, his time at the club being during a golden era with Celtic holding a hegemony in the league standings during the First World War era. So competition was tough.

He did play in friendlies and benefit games with the first team. He joined the Highland Light Infantry in 1914 aged 20. After the war Maley took some criticism for selling him on very cheaply.

He later was to move to Clydebank, Vale of Leven, Hull City, Sunderland, Bradford City and Queen's Park.
Michael was something of a record breaker being Hull's record when he signed from Vale Of Leven in July 1920 for £2,500, then again in March 1922 when Sunderland paid a then record fee of £5,250 to bring him from the Humber to Wearside.

Whilst with Hull, he earned one international cap for Scotland in 1922, a 2-1 defeat to Wales.

He signed for Bradford City in May 1925, and left the club in May 1927. He made 52 appearances in the Football League for them, as well as one FA Cup appearance.

Despite not having made it at Celtic, it is good to see he made it elsewhere and won an international cap.
