W Glover in the front row… I think I can shed some light on William Glover. We have the KIA notification given to his wife, Mary Glover (Reilly), in Dundee. We know he was in New Jersey briefly, and his son Edmund Glover was born there in 1911, but the family returned to Scotland almost immediately. The only photograph we have of him is as a player in a Celtic FC team picture on a post card from 1910. Celtic were kind enough to research for me but the only record they have of him is the same photograph, so they suspect he was never a full member of the club but possible played in charity/testimonial type matches.
After his death, his wife remarried, had a daughter and eventually moved to Australia where we lost touch.

Glover played in the Somers Benefit, August 1908. & a, missing, friendly on 17 September 1908. A 3-3 draw at Ayr. Transferred with Bob Craig & J Young (Strathclyde) to Morton on 20 November 1908. Re-signed by Celtic in April 1909.
He was due to take part in a Benefit match for Howden, of Patrick Thistle, on 2nd January 1908, but the match was postponed due to fog. Willie Glover, of Dundee St Joseph’s, signed for Celtic following the Somers Benefit match.
Another wee bit of military history… Private W Glover, 3818 – discharged ex-Rouen ; gassed. October 1915.
His son Edmund was raised in Dundee, played briefly for Dundee United, (provisionally in 1929 until 1932) he also played for Lochee Harp. He was in the RAF in WW2 and became a teacher/school board administrator, eventually retiring in Victoria BC Canada where he died in 1977. I hope that this fills in some gaps, and we appreciate the info contained in your posts about his brothers Regards, Aaron (great grandson of William Glover)
William Glover was a brother of James Glover who was one of the original directors of Dundee Hibernian. Their younger brother Vincent was behind the forming of the first “Brake Club” connected to Dundee Hibs. Sons of Edmund J Glover & Ellen (Helen) Cosgrove. William was born in Portessie, Scotland in 1889.
William’s wife was Catherine/Katherine Reilly. She married William Ducat, also a widower, and they settled in Partick (1921 census). He died in Glasgow (Springburn) in 1946, I can’t single out her death.
William has no known grave but is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
