Johnny Graham was signed by Celtic in May 1903 from Bristol Rovers alongside Bobby Muir and Jim Young (who was homesick).
The ex-Kilmarnock man made his debut on 5th September 1903 in a 2-0 league victory at Hibernian. However the inside right struggled for a regular start as he faced competition from the great Jimmy McMenemy.
Johnny Graham played four league games for the Bhoys sporadically during his one season at Celtic, however he was in three match winning sides, including a 3-2 win over Port Glasgow (Jimmy Quinn hat-trick) and a 6-1 win over Kilmarnock (Jimmy Quinn scoring five and Jimmy McMenemy the other). The Kilmarnock game was the last of the season.
The only match he played in which was a defeat was when Celtic lost away to Third Lanark 3-1 in September 1903 in the league, a notable result as Third Lanark went on to win the league title by 4pts, and Celtic had also lost to Third Lanark a few weeks earlier in the league by 3-1 at home as well. Celtic finished in 4th place in the league, in what was a tight race with only 1pt between 2nd and 4th placed sides.
His last game for Celtic was a club benefit game at Arthurlie on 12 May 1904, and he scored in a 1-1 draw. So he was to leave on a good note.
He returned south in May 1904 to join Millwall and then moved on to the later much satirised Accrington Stanley.
He later returned home and played for Hamilton Accies.
He passed away after a long life in May 1956, and apparently by trade before retirement he was an ‘explosives process worker’!
