Background
Born in the fanzine boom of the late 1980s 'Hail Hail' was a short lived publication. Light on written content and with a heavy emphasis on attempted humour it first appeared in the final months of 1989.
Unlike it's better known contempories 'Hail! Hail!' was actually supportive of the Kelly/White board. An article in the opening edition looked at the issue of removing the then present board of directors. It argued this would be a foolish move and that any new owner or board could end up changing the name of Celtic as well as the colours of club! It concluded that while the present board had made mistakes – adding "who hasn't" – they were at least 'Celtic-Minded'.
'Hail! Hail!' also apparently refused to criticise the performance of the Celtic team. In that first issue the editorial stated that 'Hail Hail!' would be a publication which "stood up for Celtic players and the Celtic Support". Certainly most of its jibes were directed squarely at the Huns.
While there's nothing wrong with a bit of Hun bashing the fanzine's pro-board stance obviously did not sit well with many supporters at a time when the club was clearly suffering from the mismanagement and incompetence of the Kelly/White cartel. Consequently by the end of season 1989-90 'Hail! Hail!' disappeared from view after just four issues.
