Biog
One of the more promising talents in the Youth Academy starting at the age of 8, Herron had a great start in the youth sides, playing mostly on the wing and on the right of a three-man midfield. He provided a scoring threat for the team, and had good leadership qualities as well, having captained both the 16s and 17s to cup triumph.
An injury on the first day of pre-season in season 2012-13 stumped Herron’s progress but on his return he began to work his way into the first-team squad. He was an unused substitute for the great UEFA Champions League win against Barcelona (2-1 win) so grabbing a great seat at this incredible event, likely praying for a chance to get onto the field even for just a moment.
He eventually made his first appearance for the senior side against Ross County later that year in December 2012 in a comprehensive 4-0 victory, coming on a sub for Georgios Samaras quite late in the game. At least he got to play a bit-part in a league title winning squad.
He was to win only one further match appearance for the first team in a 3-3 draw v Motherwell away in April 2014. One report criticised him as below, but he was playing out of position at right-back due to a long list of injuries:
“John Herron making his first start as full-back, looked still to be asleep when the Steelmen took the lead“.
At the time, Celtic were overburdened with successful players in the midfield role, including Johansen, Brown, Mulgrew and Biton. So breaking through was a hard task for anyone.
A loan spell at lowly Cowdenbeath saw him manage only a handful of matches, and in June 2015 he left Celtic to transfer down to Blackpool.
He never managed to really make it with Blackpool who were struggling and ended up relegated at the end of season 2015/16. He later had a loan spell at Dunfermline, then played for Raith Rovers, Glentoran and Larne.
In 2022, Larne FC suspended and then sacked John Herron after images of him wearing a t-shirt with a pro-IRA slogan appeared on social media.
He then moved on to play for clubs in Australia and Gibraltar. […]

Midfielder John Herron couldn’t be happier as he regularly hits the back of the net and watches some of his team-mates from primary school days force their way into Neil Lennon’s first team plans.
This season’s Celtic’s u-19 have rattled off seven wins on the bounce, including home and away wins over Manchester City, and have impressed with their performances as much as by their results.
Vital to the teams success has been the continuity through the ranks with Herron the first player to join up at the age of EIGHT.
Defenders Marcus Fraser, Joe Chalmers and Mikey Miller quickly came onboard with all four regulars in this season’s u-19 side after winning the Glasgow Cup last term as u-17′s.
“A lot of people say that you have a better chance of breaking through at other clubs but at Celtic you’ve got to keep pushing just to stay in the side,” Herron explained.
“I know what it’s like to be at a big club with lots of competition for places and that provides it’s own incentives. I came in when I was 8 turning 9 and was joined by Joe Chalmers and Marcus Fraser about nine months later.
“I’ve played with Joe, Marcus and Mikey (Miller) through thick and thin since under-9′s!
“I’m from Coatbridge and Celtic has always been part of my life. Tommy Burns, John McStay and Hugh McGovern brought me in to Celtic, I’ve always been a fan and always will be.”
Herron added: “Obviously Henrik Larsson was a hero but as a midfielder I liked to watch Stan Petrov and Lubo Moravcik.
“Seeing Marcus playing for the first team has been fantastic for all of the players in the u-19 squad. The manager is giving players a chance, he showed that with Marcus who has been in great form.
“He’s worked his way into the first team, the manager has shown that he’s willing to push someone in if there’s a place, he’s not scared to call in a younger player if they are doing well and that helps everyone around the place.”
On Saturday Celtic take on St Johnstone at Stirling Univercity before travelling to Barcelona for the latest adventure in the Next Gen Series.
John Kennedy’s side produced their best performance of the season in the 4-2 win away to Manchester City with Herron looking to repeat that standard in every match.
He added: “The game at Man City has been the highlight of the season so far and we have to try and produce that every week. We know what is expected.
“At Manchester City we were told to press high up the park, we pressed them as a unit and didn’t run around as individuals.
“It was great to score in that match and getting goals is part of a midfielders job. I’ve scored five in our current run and love finding the back of the net.
“I’m used to playing in the middle of the park but this season I’ve been playing wide on the right.
“My job is to get on the ball, cut inside and help create chances for others. It’s been going well but there’s so much competition for places that you have to be on form to keep a jersey.
“We’ve got a great squad and if anyone is out injured we can call in someone like Stewart Findlay and he’s settled into the team straight away.
“There’s a great atmosphere amongst the players, everyone is spurring each other on and you can see that in our results.”

It’s one of the most treasured memories of his fledging career. The Celtic Youth Academy graduate, who recently made his first competitive top-team start, was part of the young Hoops side who overcame Rangers three years ago thanks to Paul George’s goal. Having suffered disappointment 12 months earlier in a 2-1 defeat to their Glasgow rivals at Broadwood, it made victory all the more satisfying for Herron and his young colleagues. And while he won’t be involved in tonight’s showpiece at Celtic Park, he knows the significance of the occasion to all the young Celts taking part. “It’s a huge competition,” he told the official Celtic website. “It was one of the major cups back in the olden days and is a great cup to win. I played in the final twice. When I played the first time I was in the older team and we got beat but the next year we won it very comfortably against Rangers. “It meant everything. When I played in the season before with the older team, we had a great side. We played great football, performed all the way to the final and scored lots of goal, but we never won it as we never performed on the night. “It also meant a lot to me as it was the team I had grown up with from the younger ages with guys like Marcus Fraser and Joe Chalmers, so to then go on to win the Glasgow Cup with them was really good.” And the 20-year-old will be in attendance in Paradise tonight offering his support to Tommy McIntyre’s young guns as they aim to get their hands on the silverware again for the first time since 2011. “I was speaking to a few of the young boys the other day and wishing them well,” said the Coatbridge Bhoy. “I will be going along tonight and will speak to them before the game as well. “They have a good team and the main thing in the Glasgow Cup is making sure you work hard and get stuck in. The attitude is first and then the football shines through. “It’s a Celtic-Rangers game so they need to win the battle first and foremost, and then if they do that they have a great chance of winning it.”
John Herron: Larne suspend midfielder following images of him wearing a pro-IRA t-shirt

Irish Premiership club Larne have suspended John Herron with immediate effect after images of him wearing a t-shirt with a pro-IRA slogan appeared on social media.
The club have launched an investigation after Herron was photographed wearing the t-shirt at a concert at the weekend.
“For the period of his suspension, John will not represent the club in fixtures at any level. An investigation into this incident is now underway,” Larne said in a statement on Monday.
“We have shown that we are an inclusive football club for all, demonstrated not only in words but also by our extensive work in the local community.
“There is no room for behaviour which falls outside of this ethos and we fully expect members, players and anyone associated with the club to reflect these standards at all times.
“We will be making no further comment until the investigation has been completed.”
The Irish FA said it is aware of the image that has been circulated.
Midfielder Herron, from Scotland, began his professional football career at Celtic. He moved to the Irish Premiership in 2018 when he joined Glentoran, before signing for Larne in 2020.
