Last gasp signing at the end of the1993/1994 season by Lou Macari. He played as a trialist with the Reserves in the last game of their season against Stirling Albion, then came on as a sub in the Mark Hughes Testimonial with the first team and went to Canada with the first team squad. He signed a 1 year deal on 1/6/94.
Originally from Kilmarnock, he had been an Army chef, having joined the Army at 16. He was spotted by Pat Crerand in an Army tourney in Monchengladbach and recommended to Macari. Gary bought his way out the Army and turned up at Celtic.
At the start of 94/95 with the arrival of Tommy Burns, he was injured in pre-season training. Celtic were unable to play either Holt or Justin Whittle (who arrived at the same time and from the same route as Holt) due to a problem with their player registrations and getting their release from the Army. They were never in fact registered as Celtic players with the SFA but Celtic honoured an agreement made with them made by Lou Macari. They both left to join Macari at Stoke on 20/10/94.
Subsequently Gary returned to Scotland in 1995 and joined Kilmarnock and made his name as a player with Killie. In 2001 he joined Norwich City where he was renowned for his fitness and drive from central midfield. His final season at Norwich was difficult and he left to join Nottingham Forest in 2005. Paul Lambert took him on a free transfer from Forest to Wycombe Wanderers and he moved with the manager to Colchester but found himself marooned when Lambert was head-hunted to take over at Norwich. Colchester released Holt at the end of October 2009 and he is currently playing for non-league Lowestoft Town.
