Celtic Career Review
A dominant central defender signed from the youth ranks of Wearside cracks Sunderland.
Was very highly rated at the time and Celtic fought off Premiership interest to make him the club's first ever English youth signing. He progressed as far as the reserve team before being released in 2006 and returning home to NE England.
A successful 06/07 season at minnows Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastics saw Hutchinson move up the footballing 'pyramid' with a switch to ambitious Unibond-Leaguers Newcastle Blue Star. Sadly for Paul, Andy Gowens, the manager who brought him to Blue Star, was promptly cast aside in favour of former Irish international Tommy Cassidy. Within weeks Gowens had a new job at Ashington and swooped for Hutchinson in September 2007.
He continued to star as Ashington captain – alongside goalgetting brother Stephen – and picked up the club's POTY award in 2007/08.
Switched to West Allotment Celtic in May 2009, but disaster struck when he damaged his cruciate ligament vs. Tow Law Town and he looks set to miss the entire 2009/10 season.
