BiogIrvine, Jackson - The Celtic Wiki

Jackson Irvine was born in Scotland but grew up in Australia, He joined Celtic in 2010 from Melbourne Victory, and became an important part of what was a successful youth set-up at Celtic for around three years. Trophies at the lower levels but now needed somehow to make the leap to the top tier.

Jackson finally made his first team debut in a token appearance in September 2012 as a sub in the 2-2 draw with Hibs. Little else for chances thereafter but then again, Lennon despite the opportunity to bleed youngsters seemed to shy away from giving them further chances.

However, in August 2013, he played in a friendly match for the first team v Liverpool which was won one nil by Celtic. Taking in that the Celtic side was mostly a second side against Liverpool’s mostly first team then it was a great and surprising victory. Partly instrumental in this victory was a very fine performance by Irvine who received many plaudits, and would have won more if more supporters knew of him at that point. So it seemed like he had a bright future at the club.

Then straight after that match he was put out on loan to Kilmarnock for 2013/14. He was already set up for loans but the Liverpool match was thought to possibly halt the loan move out but it was not to be.

It wasn’t all bad, and he was called up to the Australian national squad in 2013 to win his first cap as a sub coming on v Canada in a 3-0 victory.

He was loaned out for a season again in 2014/15 to Ross County, and signed on for them permanently in July 2015, now sporting a pony-tail.

It wasn’t to be for him at Celtic. The success of Nir Biton at Celtic, and a wealth of performing midfielders was going to make it difficult to make a breakthrough. Although some could argue that he could have been used as a back-up, defensive midfielders are a rare commodity.

We wished him the best.

Post-Celtic

After Celtic, he went on to have a good career at Ross County, Burton Albion, Hull City, Hibs and FC St Pauli.

Possibly, his most notable claim to fame with Celtic supporters was that he was the first in Scottish football circles to publicly propose Ange Postecoglu to be considered for the managerial role (well before others), and likely he was indicating the vacant Celtic role too at the time. However, it would be stretching things to claim that Celtic followed up on Postecoglu on the back of Jackson Irvine’s recommendation.

“Ange Postecoglou was an amazing, unbelievable coach. He’s in Japan now, he’s a coach I would love to see come and manage in Europe, I think he’d do really, really well.”

When Celtic went over to play in the ‘Sydney Cup’ friendly tournament, Jackson Irvine even turned up wearing a Celtic shirt to support the side (even though at this point he was the captain of German side St Pauli).

FROMER Celtic midfielder Jackson Irvine has spoken glowingly of the credentials of Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou is rumoured to be the new favourite for the Celtic job after Eddie Howe’s talks with the club fell through.

Irvine worked under the Greek-born Australian manager while he was head coach of the Australian National Team. Postecoglou won the Asian Cup with the Socceroos before leaving his role just before the 2018 World Cup.

Irvine, who spent the second half of last season at Hibs after leaving Hull, explained why he would love to see the 55-year-old manage in Europe.

Glasgow Times:

Speaking on Open Goal, Irvine said: “Ange Postecoglou was an amazing, unbelievable coach. He’s in Japan now, he’s a coach I would love to see come and manage in Europe, I think he’d do really, really well.

“He ended up falling out, it became a bit of a mess at the end but as a coach he was top notch.

“The way he was asking us to play was hectic. The year before the World Cup was the Confederations Cup. We’d [Australia] won the Asian Cup before so we didn’t play that. We played Germany, Cameroon and Chile at the Confeds.

“This was Bielsa’s Chile by the way. We played that man for man style and went toe-to-toe with these teams, it was mental. Then we qualified and he walked away.”
