Henry Jarvis – better known as George Jarvis – was a hard-working wing-half who signed for Celtic from Cambuslang Rangers in November 1912.
A shipyard electrician by trade, Henry Jarvis made his Hoops debut in a 2-1 home league defeat to Motherwell on 23rd November 1912 after being drafted into the side following an injury to Jim Young.
He remained the great Jim Young’s under-study during his time at Celtic Park, which limited his appearances.
In total, he made only seven league appearances for the Bhoys but had a fair record, with four wins and two draws. Six of the matches were in season 1912/13, mostly towards the tail-end of the season.
He never played for Celtic in the league title winning season of 1913/14, but did play one game in the league title winning season of 1914/15, a 1-1 draw with Hibs away in Sep 1914, his last game for the club.
He was partly unlucky as it was the start of a golden era for Celtic, as the first team won league titles during his time from the 1913/14 season onwards, so difficult to break into a successful side. He therefore played only a bit-part in that success on the field, so he missed out on the bulk of silverware & on-field recognition during his time with the club.
After a string of loan spells at various clubs he eventually joined Stoke City in 1919.
Still, he loved the club it seems long after he left. He gave up his ticket to the much lauded Coronation Cup final to Patsy Gallagher (who was at this time within a month of his death) to listen to it on the radio. Let’s hope he got a ticket to one of the later major finals (in 1957 or in the late 1960s) as a reward in return.
He passed away in 1969.
