BiogBobby Jeffrey

Ayr-born outside-left Robert ‘Bobby’ Jeffrey was signed by Celtic in October 1961 from Coltness United. His junior club was a fine stable for producing players, including Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell with whom Bobby Jeffrey signed up to Celtic for at the same time.

Bobby Jeffrey made his debut on 11th November 1962, just a few days after his 20th birthday, in a 1-0 league defeat at home to newly promoted Queen of the South.

Hampered by a lack of real pace, Bobby Jeffrey was a tidy but ultimately limited player. The Scotland Under 23 international played eight times for Celtic and scored one goal against Queen of the South in a 4-0 league win in Aug 1963.

He also played in one Glasgow Cup game in season 1962-63, but didn’t get to play in the final which Celtic lost to Third Lanark.

It was the Lean Years for Celtic, when nothing was going right for the club, not an easy time to be a Celtic player, especially for any aspiring youngsters. He at least got to play alongside some aspiring players who were to in time make history.

He’d been moved into the first team taking the place of Alec Byrne, but Frank Brogan was soon brought in as first choice instead.

His last game was against Queen of the South in a 3-2 league cup win. For some curious set of coincidences, his Celtic career seems to be quite tightly tied to Queen of the South: his debut, the only match he scored in, and his final match were all against Queen of the South.

He moved to Airdrie in October 1963. It was hard to make it at Celtic but worse was to come just a few weeks after than transfer when for Airdrie he was in their side that lost 9-0 to Celtic on 26 Oct 1963. It would have been ten but for Celtic’s goalkeeper Frank Haffey taking & missing a penalty.

He moved on to play for a number of clubs across the UK, but never reached any great heights.
