Hall of Fame Honour for John Thomson

CELTIC goalkeeping legend John Thomson will be inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. And in a break with tradition, his inclusion has been announced ahead of the gala dinner in November.
Thomson was only 22 when he tragically died following a collision with Rangers striker Sam English during a game at Ibrox on September 5, 1931.
Although still a young man, John Thomson had already established himself as Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper and had made 188 appearances for the club following his debut against Cowdenbeath in November 1929. He was also Scotland’s No.1 goalkeeper by the time of his tragic and untimely death.
Over the past two years, John Thomson has received many nominations for the Hall of Fame, including one from Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
The Prime Minister, who is a Fife MP, from where the Celtic keeper came from, said: “John Thomson would have been 100 years old next year and it would be a fitting tribute for this local hero to be given his rightful place alongside Scotland’s football elite.”
Inductees into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame are those truly great players, managers and officials who have reached the pinnacle of their profession and have made a significant contribution to Scottish football’s reputation through their skill, spirit and determination.
The Hall of Fame is a permanent feature in the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park.
