Kerrydale Street European Player of the Year 2006/7 – Result (20th March 2007)
First of all, a massive thank-you to Auldbhoy who has totted up and collated all of the votes to come up with the results of the KDS European Player of the Year – Roll of Honour.
Secondly, a massive thanks to all of you who took the time to vote on the European MOTM threads and the final vote last week to find which hooped hero won the hearts and minds of the KDS community due to his performances in European competition this season 2006/7.
In the final reckoning, the competition was tough; some places being decided by the absolute narrowest of margins.
115 KDS members voted for their top 10 from the 19 players who represented Celtic in European competition this season. Those who did not make the cut include goalscorer against Benfica, Stephen Pearson; the once-mighty Bobo Balde who helped Celtic to a memorable clean sheet against a myriad of Man Utd millionaires, last seasons Scottish player of the year Shaun Maloney, this seasons standout for Young Player of the Year Aiden McGeady, Celtics joint top scorer from last season Maciej Zurawski, unfortunate injury victims Gary Caldwell and Mark Wilson as well as big summer signings Jiri Jarosik and Thomas Gravesen. Quite a list.
So without any more arsing about, here we go.
10. Paul Telfer (Points: 285)
Who'da thunk it? Last summer this man was on the hit list of every Celtic fan bar a few who wouldn't say boo to a ghost. Depending on who you spoke to, Telfer was washed-up or a let-down, however he came through it all and played a valuable part in the campaign.
9. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Points: 307)
Big Jan also had his injuries during the campaign but we will be disappointed at him finishing 9th in this vote, because days after signing he was turning Rio Ferdinand and putting us ahead at Old Trafford, things looked great. Injuries and being left up front alone meant that his performances (whilst tireless and filled with effort) seemed blunted and his goalscoring prowess suffered.
8. Darren O'Dea (Points: 376)
I have yet to hear a bad word said about this young Celts performances. Arriving into the first team this season he has taken his chance by the scruff of the neck. 180 minutes without conceding a goal against Milan showed that he is not afraid of top-level football. Well done Darren.
7. Neil Lennon (Points: 391)
Surely worthy of a ten-pager alone, Lennys fans and detractors have been at eachothers throats all season. He may never play in Europe for Celtic again and despite his gathering limitations on the field, our captains hallmark effort and desire helped him put in performances this season that a man of any age could have been pretty proud of.
6. Evander Sno (Points: 392)
Take the tone of Peter Kays "Garlic Bread", switch it to "Eighty Grand" and you'll bowl them over with your hilarious impression of the Feyenoord chairman speaking to his manager about frosty. Massive potential and some pretty fine European performances to boot including a memorable MOTM performance at the heart of midfield against some guys called Gattuso, Pirlo and Kaka.
5. Kenny Miller (Points: 422)
Say what you like, but after 3 games Kenny was the Champions League joint top scorer! Unfortunately it couldn't last and its pretty certain that Kenny will not last as long as the memory of his fantastic breakaway goal that handed Benfica their dinner.
4. Stephen McManus (Points: 748)
He's been described as having "the heart of a Lisbon Lion" and Stephen is definitely in the mould of a former European ruler. Local bhoy, and a fan he is built on pure effort, hard work and a love for the jersey. Maturing every year into a leader of men.
3. Lee Naylor (Points: 884)
Or "who" as he became known. You could have been forgiven for thinking his name was Naylorffs when he signed, but his popularity has been meteoric and tHe wEAseL endeared himself to the Celtic faithful with some brilliant displays this season. Whatever next? An engurland cap maybe?
2. Shunsuke Nakamura (Points: 1014)
So Japaneasy. When he put Man Utd to the samurai sword with one of the greatest freekicks anyone will ever see, he launched himself into European recognition. It was a seminal moment of the entire campaign, and having already done the same on the road, people knew it was no fluke. Big Van Der Saar will be happy if he never see's our hero again.
1. Artur Boruc (Points: 1102)
Is he? Could he be? He might just be. Artur has gained a reputation now as one of the best keepers in the world, maybe even the best. His last-gasp penalty save against Man Utd which sent us into the knock-out stages was the stuff of hollywood scriptwriting. His performances in some of the cauldrons of European football set him apart as a man who loves the big occasion, and because of those performances; Artur has become the Kerrydale Street European Player of Year 2006/7.
Congratulations Artur.
