A product of Celtic Boys Club, midfielder Peter Mackie joined the senior Bhoys full time in August 1976.
Impressive performances in the Celtic youth ranks meant that Mackie was the latest youngster to be hailed ‘the next big thing’ but like so many before and after him he was to never fulfil his early potential.
Mackie’s debut came as a sub for Frank Munro in a 1-1 League Cup match at home to Stirling Albion on 26th October 1977 and he made his full debut in the unlikely position of right back against St Mirren in the league cup on November 16th.
He was however destined to remain second fiddle to Davie Provan in the Parkhead pecking order, and so in November 1979 he left for Dundee in search of first team football although there was some surprise at the time at Celtic agreeing to his departure for a fee of £30,000.
He managed to to play a few games for Celtic in the glorious 1978/79 season that saw Celtic win the league at the death v Rangers, however he was unfortunate to have played in some of the poorer results that seasons, with two losses v Dundee Utd & Hearts in October 1978. It wasn’t his fault, as it was a miserable month of results for Celtic, with defeats to Motherwell & Aberdeen too that month in which he didn’t play.
He did get to be part of the side in a 2-0 win v St Mirren late on in the season that helped push Celtic to the title. He helped Celtic to a 3-2 victory v Clyde in the Glasgow Cup that season by scoring a double, but sadly Celtic lost the final 3-1 v Rangers (he played in that match).
Post-Celtic
Following his move, he went on to be a long-term player for Dundee spending around 5 seasons there. He was to be instrumental in Dundee’s shock 5-1 victory over Celtic at Dens in April 1980 scoring one of Dundee’s goals that day. As Celtic lost the league to Aberdeen that season by just the one point, it was a costly result for Celtic but heralded a new era for Aberdeen & Scottish football. Celtic lost to Aberdeen the following week also which was probably the more important defining result for the season.
He later moved on to play for St Mirren, Partick Thistle and Stranraer (trailist) before hanging up his boots.
