Tommy McIntyre was offered the position of Head of Professional Academy by Celtic in April 2009. He accepted the post and officially started work on July 1st 2009. Describing the post as ‘an opportunity not to be missed and an honour to work for the club’ he was invited in to start work early with Chris McCart so that structures would be in place for season 2009/10. He was previously Head of Youth Development and Assistant Technical Director with the Scottish Football Association.
He said: "I'm very aware of the work Tommy Burns put in to create the academy and the passion he had for the development of youth players who could go on to make careers for themselves at the club.
"His love of Celtic and all of the club traditions as well as his own values will never be forgotten.
"Tommy didn't only want good players coming through the ranks.
“He wanted the right type of person to be playing at Celtic. That was very important to him and it will be the same for me.
"I spoke with a lot of people at the club when I was offered the job and I know how strongly they all feel about what Tommy started here.
"I will be working directly with Chris McCart and he mapped out his vision for the club. I was also really impressed with what Peter Lawwell had to say.
"He highlighted his vision as well but what struck me was his passion and enthusiasm for Celtic. It was clear to see and it makes you want to be a part of what's going on there.
"The facilities are superb as well. The players want for nothing at Lennoxtown and just going to work there every day will be a pleasure.
"Gordon Strachan phoned me and kept talking about how wonderful a club it is to work for. I also had a chat with Billy Stark, who knows all about Celtic, and he spoke highly of it."
His responsibility is to manage and provide direction for Lennoxtown and to work in close conjunction with and report to Chris McCart, Head of Youth, to deliver a planned progression for full-time young players brought in and developed through the Celtic Academy. This translates into overall everyday responsibility for the U17 and U19 squads at Lennoxtown working closely with the U17 and U19 coaches Steven Frail and Miodrag Krivokadic.
Tommy (dob 26/12/63, Bellshill)) began his playing career as a centre-half with Aberdeen after playing as a youth with Fir Park Boys Club. He moved to Hibernian in 1986 making over 120 appearances for them before joining Airdrie in 1994 to see out the final years of his career.
Playing Career
Club | From | To | Appearances | Goals |
Aberdeen | 1983 | 1986 | 19 | 0 |
Hibernian | 1986 | 1994 | 126 | 9 |

When he retired from full time professional football in 1996 Tommy took up a post with the SFA as a coach moving up to Head of Coach Education, Head of Youth Development where he was involved in implementing the Youth Initiative by the SFA, and onto Assistant Technical Director (to Technical Director Jim Fleeting).
Peter Lawwell, commenting on his appointment said:
“The club in recent years has enjoyed a tremendous track record of developing its own players.
"We have made great investment in our youth development programmes and we feel we now have an excellent Academy structure with a number of high-calibre individuals in place. Tommy’s appointment is another example of the importance we place in this area.
“Tommy is a highly sought after individual and we are delighted that he has chosen to join Celtic – we are sure he will make a tremendous impact.”
