Biog

The nephew of the great Celt Andy McAtee, Anthony was a Maryhill Harp player who joined the Bhoys in August 1942. He was said to be “hard as nails“.

A miner by trade, Tony McAtee was a robust outside left who also had an eye for goal, however he scored only once for Celtic.

His Celtic debut came in a 2-2 Regional League draw at home to Hamilton on August 22nd 1942, and he had a short run of games early in season 1942-43.

His only goal was in a 3-1 away victory over Clyde. Celtic didn’t win any of the other matches he played in, all in the truncated wartime league. Celtic may have been scoring well but were leaking goals badly and changes were needed.

He also played in a Glasgow Charity Cup match v Rangers when Celtic lost 2-1.

He went on to make just four first team appearances in the wartime regional league for Celtic and scored one goal before being freed by the club in May 1943. It was a poor season to play with Celtic who finished in ninth position in the truncated league.

The Wartime era was a poor time overall to be at Celtic, not only due to the war effort. It is hard to say what could have been for anyone if circumstances were any better.
