Hurlford born Dan McCann (a “thin slip of a boy“) was an inside left who signed for Celtic in May 1910 from Dundee.

After a brave performance for Dundee against Rangers, where after being concussed in the match he still came back onto the pitch to help them win, so he was to be a hero there. This was likely the match won 4-2 at home where he scored twice, as his only other appearance v Rangers was a 2-1 defeat away. He never scored v Celtic in three appearances.

Yet he pleaded with Dundee to go to Celtic. Willie Maley was said to be keen on the “dashing young forward“.

His debut came on August 17th at Parkhead when Celtic defeated Airdrie 3-0 in a league clash. It turned out to be the only winning performance in the league that Dan was to appear in with Celtic.

A quick footed and brave footballer he lacked the physical strength to really make an impact and consequently made only seven appearances. He was only ever played when deputising for Quinn and Johnstone, and was never really given much of a run in the first team.

With the arrival of John Hastie, Dan was pushed further back in the queue for a first team place.

His penultimate game saw him score a goal v Hearts in a 1-1 draw which will have given him some pride and some consolation for his time at Celtic.

He moved on to Dundee Hibernian (precursor to Dundee Utd) in May 1911. A sad one as he wanted to play for Celtic.

Celtic actually had a poor season in 1910-11, finishing fifth in the league with Rangers winning the league and even Partick & Falkirk ahead in the final standings. Dan only got to play in two winning Celtic sides: his debut 3-0 v Airdrie in the league and a 2-1 win over Partick in the Glasgow Cup. So it didn’t help his case.

Later signed up for the war effort in 1914, and was ranked as a Corporal by Nov 1917.

Dan passed away in 1957 and is at rest in Riccarton Cemetery.
