Darren McCauley was recognized as one of the best prospects in Irish football. He was previously a member of the Northern Ireland Under-18 Schools' team that won the tri-nation Schools' tournament in Jersey in February 2009. He also captained the under 18 schoolboys to victory in the Carnegie Centenary Shield match against England in March 2009. McCauley is currently a member of the Republic of Ireland Under 19 squad.
He had trials with Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich in September 2009 and both clubs were keen to sign him, along with other interest from Coventry City and Hearts. Celtic appear to have had a long term interest in the player through their association with Derry City. Derry City signed the youngster on an amateur contract whilst he continued to study for A-Levels at St Columb’s College. He had previously played for Top of the Hill Celtic.
In January 2010 Derry City allowed him to move on a six month loan deal to Celtic and he made his debut in an U19 Cup game for Celtic youths on 14th February in a 4-5 Youth Cup win against Dundee Utd.
Reportedly training with Coleraine in July 2010. He played for Derry City in their friendly v. St Mirren on 4 August, impressing in the 1-1 draw. Taken back on at the Brandywell but said to be keen on a swift return to the UK.
