Goalkeeper Daniel McGarvey made just a solitary appearance for Celtic in the wartime Regional League.
Due to regular keepers John Hunter and Jimmy Culley being unavailable, the Maryhill Harp man was drafted in on 6th December 1941 for a home tie with Dumbarton. Celtic won the game 4-2.
He lost a goal in both halves of the game, but Celtic still won with Dumbarton raging that Jimmy Delaney had handled for the third goal.
It was Daniel McGarvey’s only game in the loan spell, and so he left with a 100% winning record (albeit just the one game). Taking in how poor Celtic were during the 1940’s, that is a fine and rare boast, especially as some of his predecessors in goal (such as Robert Smith and Donald McKay) had very poor records in goals. Not to dismiss that he still did concede two goals.
He was a short-term draft loan (not uncommon in the war years), and he did what was required of him.
Note: It is marked in another external site that Robert Smith was the goalkeeper to play for Celtic on 6 Dec 1941 v Dumbarton in the league. From our records that is wrong, as Robert Smith had long since left Celtic, and it was Dan McGarvey in goals that day.
