A tough centre-half Vincent McGrogan signed for Celtic from Largs Thistle in January 1925, and then made his debut in a 7-0 league victory over Third Lanark at Parkhead on the 5th of that same month.
His often overtly robust approach to the game meant he was frequently penalised by referees. As one commentator stated:
“McGrogan requires some subduing“.
In one match in January 1925 v Motherwell, he was sent to have an early bath after reportedly trying to maim Hugh Ferguson. On the hearing over the incident, a crowd gathered outside the offices, some baying for the blood of the referee (Dougray) who had ordered off Vinny McGrogan, whilst the rest were Third Lanark fans. It was to be the only match Celtic lost in which he had played in with the first team.
Luck was to desert him, as after only a short time at Celtic, he suffered a knee injury in February 1925 from which he would never fully recover from.
In total, his time in the first team was to be limited to just six league & Scottish Cup appearances for Celtic, but he was to have a proud record of only the one defeat suffered in those matches. In the cup matches, he may only have played in an early round (against lowly Solway Star from the Border), but he still played a bit part as Celtic went on a run to win the Scottish Cup in 1925.
He left the Hoops in 1927, and is reported to have retired from football aged only 25, having never played another first team game for Celtic. Likely it was all due to the knee injury. Sadly, he didn’t get to play in any of the league matches in 1926/27 when Celtic went on to win the league title.
