BiogPeter McManus

Wing-half Peter McManus made just a solitary appearance for Celtic after signing for the Bhoys from St Bernard’s in June 1895.

He was part of the St Bernard’s team that had won the Scottish Cup in 1895 (in the ‘Edinburgh Slam‘ beating Renton in the final, Hearts winning the league title and Hibs the second division all that season) so he was regarded as a good acquisition.

His one and only senior competitive game (League or Scottish Cup) for Celtic came in a 3-0 defeat to his old club on 16th September 1895 in the league. In fairness, McManus can hardly be pinned for the full blame as the first team had the week before lost 5-0 at home (a record home domestic defeat) to Hearts. James Blessington was back in the side in the next match.

Ironically, he soon returned to his former club (St Bernard’s) the very next month after failing to impress Willie Maley of his ability (“[he was] not up to standard”).

So in reflection he possibly has quite a unique record in Celtic’s history if not all of football (hard to see this situation having ever been replicated): signed for Celtic from St Bernard’s, only game for Celtic was v St Bernard’s (3-0 defeat), then left to go straight back to St Bernard’s. As if it was fate for him to be linked at the hip to St Bernard’s.

Celtic still went on to win the league that season, so he played a walk-on part in that campaign.

After football, he was a garage hand in West Calder.
