Biog

A marauding right wingback who had grown up in the shadow of Parkhead and initially signed for the club at 16, having played his schoolboy football with Eastercraigs BC.

After a successful season in the Boy's Club system, which culminated in international recognition by Scotland U16s, McSherry was brought onto the 'groundstaff' and spent 1991/92 as an apprentice professional. This season he divided his time between Celtic's 'Scottish Amateur Youth League' and 'Premier Reserve League' sides, as well as turning out for then feeder club Giffnock North AAFC. Continued to figure the following season with his versatility valued by Youth supremo Benny Rooney. However, full Pro terms were not forthcoming and he departed in May 1993 – shortly followed by Rooney.

Handed professional forms by Motherwell for 1993/94, but played much of his football 'farmed out' on loan to Cumbernauld United Juniors and struggled with injury.

This was obviously not to Paul's taste as he emigrated to the USA in 1994 and attended Massasoit College, Massachusetts (where his path may have crossed with Sean McBride). From there he progressed to Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution in Connecticut, and took a degree in Sociology and Anthropology while starring for the varsity 'soccer' team.

After graduation in 1998, McSherry remained Stateside and built an enviable career in the financial services industry. Now a seasoned veteran, he remains an enthusiastic performer for ASLC (Amateur Soccer League of Connecticut) outfit The Doyle FC.

"Paul McSherry brings a similar story to Stamford from the other side of the Atlantic.

McSherry grew up around the corner from Celtic Park in Glascow, Scotland. Because his father worked the turnstiles at the stadium, McSherry began attending Celtic games at age 5, lucky enough to watch his heroes in the trademark green and white striped kit firsthand.

The youngster had talent and signed a young professional contract with the club upon leaving high school, at 16. "I was training with my heroes," said McSherry, 33, who was signed by Liam Brady, the then Celtic manager, whose playing career had taken him to world-class clubs like AC Milan. "These were guys I grew up watching, guys that had played for Scotland, and now I'm playing with them? Remember, I had just graduated high school."
