Bob McWilliam was an outside-left who played seven times for Celtic during two brief spells at the club. He was wanted by Man City with their manager willing to pay £130 for “the brand new Denny Hib“.
Bob McWilliam though wanted to come to Celtic, and the promising youngster was brought to Celtic as a 19-year-old from his Denny Hibernian club.
His debut was in a 3-0 league victory over Kilmarnock on September 8th 1928 at Parkhead. However it was too much too soon, with one comment stating:
“…a mistake. A month or two ago he was only a juvenile…he is immature, inexperienced, green. He requires nursing, not shoving into the team as if he were a ready-made winger…Celtic directors will spoil him if they treat him as a matured and experienced product”.
He had a fair record in the seven matches he played in, none lost in his first spell at Celtic.
Within a year he had joined Watford but would return to Celtic for one final appearance in February 1932 following the collapse of his then club Leith Athletic. It was to be his only defeat with Celtic (2-1 to Clyde in Feb 1932), otherwise he’d have had an unbeaten record with Celtic.
Regardless, despite two opportunities at Celtic, he just couldn’t make it at the club. He left for Yeovil & Petters Utd in December 1932. He then moved onto Newry Town (1933), Larne (Aug 1933) and then finally Coleraine (Oct 1933).
