It’s a discussion that could go on for ever. What is Celtic’s Dream Team? This release was filmed in 1996 so it was pre-Larsson and of course preceded the Greatest Ever Team voted by fans in 2002. There were no players from before the 60s so no place for McGrory, Tully, Quinn, Gallagher among many other Celtic greats. Although there is a discussion about them at the start with Jimmy McGrory recounting the day Patsy Gallagher scored in the 1925 Cup Final after beating 5 Dundee players and then somersaulting into the net with the ball between his feet. There’s also a feature on John Thompson when discussing the goalkeeping options.
The premise of this programme is that a number of former players like McNeill, Grant, Hay, Burns, Murdoch, a supporters group, well known Celtic fans including Phil Differ, Matt McGlone, Willie Haughey and former Celtic fan Hugh Keevins discuss the merits of individual players while putting forward their own 11 players. It’s not exactly clear how the final decision is made in the end but it allows time for loads of footage of players who were put up for each position. Some of it is familiar but a lot of it is real archive material. There’s Roy Baines saving a penalty from Hamish McAlpine on his debut, Billy McNeill scoring with his left foot and footage of Danny McGrain showing why he was arguably the world’s best ever right back.
I won’t spoil the surprise of what they greatest team turned out to be but there were a few stick on like McNeill Johnston and McGrain. The biggest surprise was John Collins getting in the team ahead of McStay amongst others. I couldn't really understand that one. When it was released in 1996 I imagine this was a gap filler as we didn't really have much else to release and that respect this did a job. The problem with a lot of these type of releases is that the footage is overly familiar but at least this one delved into the massive archive and showed some long forgotten games and goals.
