This DVD is only available as part of the 5 DVD release The Celtic Collection. It’s a 60 minute interview with Martin O’Neill as he reflects on winning the treble in his first season. The interview looks over the season in chronological order as he discusses the important aspects of the campaign, players and the effect of certain games on the team.
I found the DVD lacked the humour you have come to expect from O’Neill interviews but it is a fascinating insight into how a manager operates when joining a new club. O’Neill clearly knew he was talking on a massive job to rebuild a club that had fallen far behind its rivals and talks candidly about the pressure of coming to a club like Celtic.
He takes us through how he assessed the players he had while adding in new recruits like Sutton, Valgaeren, Thompson and Agathe. Later on he added Lennon, Vega and Douglas which you could still do before the introduction of transfer windows.
O’Neill knew the importance of competing with Rangers and knew he had to make his players believe that not only could they compete with them but they could beat them.He was an excellent man manager shown in how he brought Sutton and Petta back to their best after confidence sapping seasons. He manages to make the season sound fairly straightforward and simple when it is clearly anything but.
For me personally the O’Neill years were my favourite as a Celtic fan. I was just too young to appreciate the Lions and although there have been many good times over the years the first 4 years of O’Neill’s reign were a golden time that I doubt, although I hope I’m wrong, will be surpassed. I have a lot to thank MON for and this DVD provides a little background to how he made those years so good.
