Biog

Willie Morrison signed for Celtic in November 1951 from Loanhead Mayflower. He was wanted by Celtic, Rangers and Hibs, but it was Celtic who got him.

Interestingly, he got a trial game for Celtic on 24th Nov 1951 v Berwick Rangers at Celtic Park after which he played so well that he was signed up. The curious thing is that Berwick Rangers appeared with no kit at the ground that day and had to wear Celtic’s away kit (white with shamrock). (Berwick) Rangers in Irish colours at Celtic Park.

An inside-left, he made his first team debut in a 1-0 league defeat at Raith Rovers on 12th January 1952. It was too much for him, where he was moved to Outside-Right, although he did almost create a goal with his first touch (after 15 mins on the pitch).

It was said:

“The occasion was too much for Morrison… it was a tactical error by skipper Evans to move him to outside-right when Collins had the beating of McNaught”.

Unlucky again when the opposition goalkeeper saved from point blank range from Willie Morrison in the second half.

He was not to make another first team appearance and was released in 1953 after a loan spell at Leith Athletic.

He eventually returned to Loanhead Mayflower giving them 5 years of service.
