Shettleston-born inside-left Mick Mulvey was signed by Celtic in October 1892 after previously playing with Hibs, Airdrie, Newcastle East End and latterly Carfin Shamrock.

He played his original debut for Celtic on 29 Oct 1892 in a 2-1 win over Partick Thistle, but Partick Thistle protested against Mulvey’s inclusion, on the grounds that Mulvey, had played in a Lanarkshire tie and was therefore ineligible. Partick Thistle won their case, and the match was annulled!

His actual debut came in a 5-0 league victory over Hearts at Parkhead on 5th November 1892 when Mick helped himself to a debut goal. He later scored a double v Renton in a 2-0 away victory.

He would only play three league games for the Celts. The Bhoys would win them all and Mick Mulvey finished his Celtic career with a goal a game record (in the league), and so helped Celtic along the way to the club’s maiden league title victory.

Some reports state Mick Mulvey played a further game on 22 Apr 1893, but others state it was actually a ‘J. Gibb’ (then a Celtic reserve player), and this ‘J. Gibb’ also was said to have scored in this game too. Record keeping of players and scorers in those early days wasn’t as well managed as it later was to be.

Mick Mulvey was to leave Celtic after just a season at the club, and moved on to join Dundee Harp in July 1893.
