BiogMunro, Daniel - The Celtic Wiki

Quick and tenacious Dan Munro was a pacy outside-right signed from Forres Mechanics in May 1908 after a successful trial game. It was said that “The young Forres player has football in him but is inclined to be timid“. However, likely he wasn’t that timid if you take in the below.

The Peterhead-born player made his senior debut in a 2-0 Charity Cup win over Clyde at Celtic Park on 5th May 1908. After that he played mostly in the league title winning 1908/09 season, but then only the odd match in 1909/10 & 1910/11.

In the league title winning season of 1908/09, he’d helped the fight to win Celtic the title by 1pt over Dundee, with 5 goals, including two goals v Rangers (one in a 3-1 victory away in the Ne’er day derby, the other in a 3-2 defeat).

Once had the top of his boot ripped off against Rangers within ten minutes in the League at Ibrox on 30th October 1909. He got the tear on his foot stitched up and he came back on but was a passenger in the remainder of the game. So the ‘timid‘ accusation probably isn’t wholly accurate.

Set up the goal that grabbed Celtic a draw in the Scottish Cup final of 1909, but he wasn’t to get a place in the replay, admittedly as he hadn’t been said to have had a good game in the first match despite the goal. The replay was a travesty as a riot led to the annulment of the final after a riot ensued after a second draw. Cynics thought both clubs were trying for a further gate.

He was to become mostly a back-up to Willie Kivlichan for most of the next season, only playing sporadically.

In a benefit match for Herbert Dainty at Dundee, in a challenge for the ball he lacerated his head whilst the opposition player (Davie Muir) ended up with a broken jaw and lost four teeth.

Despite tough competition for a starting slot, Dan Munro still made 36 league & Scottish Cup appearances for Celtic – scoring six goals – before moving to Bradford Park Avenue in November 1910, then later Port Vale and Clydebank. Over his last season and a bit at Celtic, he had played little for the first team and had scored no goals.

Still, he’d played his part for Celtic in the league title victories of 1908/09 & 1909/10, and so should be looked back on very fondly.

He lived to a long old age, passing away in 1968.

  • His name was previously stated here as Daniel Munro, but actually it’s Donald Munro (although he went by commonly as Dan Munro). His birthplace is Forres, born 08 October 1884 and NOT Peterhead & 2 March 1887 as previously stated here. Corrections confirmed via the family who contacted a colleague to this site.
