BiogN'Guemo, Landry - The Celtic Wiki

Cameroon international Landry N’Guemo joined Celtic in July 2009 to become Tony Mowbray’s second signing for the Hoops.  He had won a French League Cup winner with Nancy in 2006, and was part of the Cameroon side that had reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008.

The midfielder initially signed a one-year-loan deal with the Bhoys having an option to make the move from French club AS Nancy permanent. N’Guemo, who had been with Nancy since he was 15-years of age, had played 94 games for that club. Mowbray had been interested in the player when he was manager of West Brom and the Baggies weren’t the only English side linked to N’Guemo. In January 2009, it was rumoured in the English media that Arsenal and Everton were also monitoring his progress.

It was, however, Celtic who snapped up the highly-rated midfielder on 16th July 2009 when Landry linked up once more with ex-Nancy striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, who had joined the Hoops from the French side a week earlier.

“I joined because Celtic is a big club and it was a pleasure to know that Celtic wanted me”
Landry N’Guemo

Landry made his Celtic debut with an impressive performance in a pre-season friendly at Cardiff City on 22nd July 2009, and his competitive debut came a week later at Parkhead when the Hoops lost 1-0 to Dynamo Moscow in a Champions League qualifier. Seven days later, he would produce a Man Of The Match performance as the Hoops recorded an excellent 2-0 victory in Moscow to progress to the next qualifying round. Things looked to be good for Landry.

Naturally, Landry took time to settle into his new surroundings, and by the time he departed for the African Nations Cup in January 2010, he had already established himself as a popular player with the Parkhead support. His initial performances in the middle of the park were becoming a standout in what was admittedly a torrid time for Celtic.

Both energetic and efficient, the Cameroon ace generally worked the midfield well. Hard-working and determined, Landry would frequently break up opposition attacks, while his simple but smart distribution meant he rarely wasted a pass.

However, he could easily get lost in the midfield as well. He had the frustrating ability to be able to lose possession too easily and then find it difficult to regain the ball. Not always able to stamp his authority in the centre of the pitch, it meant that he was second best at times. Under Mowbray, the first team performances began to deteriorate after a bright start then nose dived spectacularly, but N’Guemo was not criticised as heavily as certain others.

It must be added that in his whole season he failed to score a single goal, which was quite a poor return and cannot be overlooked. For all his work and ability in the midfield, for some he wasn’t paying out enough dividends (he wasn’t purely a holding midfielder).

A fair player who sadly had to play under some poor coaching under Mowbray. Celtic won nothing that season and moved from one catastrophe to another until Mowbray was sacked. As a Mowbray signing it wasn’t good for N’Guemo, but acting manager Neil Lennon stuck by him through the rest of the season.

It was hoped that for the next season he would develop into a better player for Celtic having now settled at the club, but the final story was that Celtic & Nancy did not agree on the final transfer fees & terms, so N’Guemo returned to his old club. In truth, he left almost unnoticed, but really that was in part as most were simply trying to put that season way behind them.

We wished him the best.

Post-Celtic

He played most of the rest of his career back in France with a long stint at Bordeaux, and then a short-stint at Saint-Etienne. He later moved to play in Turkey, Saudi Arabia & Norway, and then appears to have retired from the playing side in 2020.

He later moved into youth coaching in France with his former club AS Nancy.

Sadly, he died prematurely, aged just 38, in a traffic accident in Cameroon in June 2024.

N’Guemo was wanted by Mowbray last season at West Brom
Celtic manager Tony Mowbray says Landry N’Guemo will add welcome competition in midfield after signing the Cameroon international from Nancy.

N’Guemo, 23, has agreed a year-long loan deal with Celtic then having the option of making the move permanent.

“He creates competition in a part of the field where we are a bit lighter than last year with Nakamura and Hartley moving on,” said Mowbray.

“I am looking forward to working with him and seeing how he gets on.”

N’Guemo will link up again with striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, who signed for £3.8m from Nancy last week.

Defensive midfielder N’Guemo was wanted last season by Mowbray at West Brom, where Fortune ended the season on loan.

N’Guemo was glad of a chance to join the Glasgow club despite reported interest from top-flight clubs in England.

“I feel very happy,” he said. “I joined because Celtic is a big club and it was a pleasure to know that Celtic wanted me.”

N’Guemo is hopeful of remaining with the Scottish Premier League club beyond his loan spell should he impress in Glasgow.

Former Celtic and Cameroon player Landry Nguemo has died at the age of just 38, reports in his homeland have confirmed.

The midfielder was brought to Parkhead on a season loan by Tony Mowbray in 2009, appearing for the Hoops 35 times following his arrival from French outfit Nancy. He also featured for the likes of Bordeaux, St Etienne and Kayserispor during his career and earned 42 international caps before retiring in the summer of 2020.

Reports in Cameron broke earlier today (June 27) to announce the Nguemo had tragically died having been the victim of a traffic accident in his home country, which had led to a number of his former club’s paying tribute to the player. French club Bordeaux wrote via their social media account that they were “saddened to learn of the death of Landry Nguemo”, adding that everyone at “sent its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones”.

Celtic themselves posted they were “shocked and saddened at the news of Landry N’Guemo’s passing at the young age of 38”, saying “the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Club are with Landry’s family and friends at this sad time.”
It is reported that local authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy which cost the lives of several people. The road accident is believed to have taken place at the Yaoundé-Bafoussam axis, near Obala, though the exact circumstances surrounding the accident have not been clarified.

A French League Cup winner with Nancy in 2006, Nguemo also reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008 with Cameroon during his long career. Most recently, he had returned to France, where he had been hired as a youth coach at former club Nancy in 2021.
