Biog
James Orr was a Scottish international who signed for Celtic in August 1895. He was born in Glasgow but moved to Kilmarnock as a boy when his father found work there.
A former Kilmarnock FC player Orr was signed as cover for Peter Meehan and Dan Doyle. He had also spent time at Darwen in Lancashire for three seasons.
The full-back made his debut in a 6-1 Glasgow Cup defeat of Cambuslang at Parkhead on October 19th, and was described as ‘a clean player but respected as a hard opponent‘.
He had to actually wait almost a year before winning a place in the first team for a league match, spending most of his time in the reserves. He won his place as Peter Meehan had gone on strike and was soon to be shipped out.
Orr was to make a total of just seven Celtic first team appearances in the league, and was a lucky guy, as he got to miss the disaster that was the Arthurlie Scottish Cup exit, due to a knee injury.
However, in the league games he played, Celtic lost three of them and conceded seven goals. He was only in and out the side for the league season in 1896-97. His last league game was a 2-0 win over St Bernards in September 1897, so he got to end his involvement in the first team on a good note. Celtic went on to win the league that season (1897-98) so he can take pride in his part for that.
After Celtic, he joined Kilmarnock Athletic in August 1898, and then spent a season at Glaston. He reverted to his old trade as an iron turner in Knockentiber for the rest of his life after football.
He died in 1942, and is buried in Kilmaurs churchyard.
