Match report from The Scotsman, 8th September 1920
The League game between Celtic and Motherwell at Parkhead, Glasgow, was productive of much fine play in which Celtic were easily superior. A keen struggle was witnessed in the first half, and both goalkeepers affected several brilliant clearances. In the second half, the Celtic forwards, ably led by McInally, were aggressive and the visitors’ defenders had an anxious time. About twenty minutes of the second half had gone before McInally succeeded in scoring the only goal of the game. The Motherwell forwards fell away during the latter portion of the game, and seldom troubled Shaw. Attendance, 14,000.
. The Glasgow Herald – Sep 8, 1920
Ferguson kicked off for Motherwell, but the first try was by Celtic, McLean shooting wide. For some time the visitors were kept on the defence, but none of the Parkhead forwards were finishing well. Shaw was prominent for Motherwell, but Bell’s crosses might have been made better use of. A fine drive by McLean hit the upright, with Rundell hopelessly beaten. Motherwell were penned in until the interval, and had two more very narrow escapes when McInally struck the post and Gilchrist banged against the crossbar. The second half was still very much in favour of Celtic, but the visiting defence held out until McInally scored following fine play by McLean. Apart from a breakaway by Belll – from which the visitors made a strong claim for a penalty for handling – Celtic were never far away from Rundell, who saved cleverly.
