Sticker Albums
Italian-based company Panini started a phenomenon among young football fans with its football sticker albums. The equivalent sticker collections have been produced by Merlin in recent years.
The Modena-based comic firm, founded by the Panini brothers, launched its first sticker collection in Italy in the early 1960s. Similar sticker albums were later launched on a season by season basis across Europe, and by the late 1970s and early 80s the stickers were the must have for all young football supporters everywhere, including in Scotland and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
The UK albums would feature a two page spread on the top flight club’s from England while a half page, latterly a page, would be devoted to teams in Scotland’s premier division.
The growing commercialisation of the game meant that by the late 1990s individual leagues had signed up for their own exclusive albums and Panini lost its near monopoly on the football sticker market. The firm continued to produce albums – including one for the SPL – but the popularity of the stickers would never come close to matching the halcyon days of the early 1980s.
