Overview

“The bravest deed done in the history of the British Army.”
Lt Col Gemmill, Givenchy 1915

The Celtic's congratulations on the vc - Kerrydale Streetfollowing is an article on the congratulations given to Willie Angus (former Celtic Player) on receiving the prestigious Victoria Cross in 1915.

He was awarded this medal for his bravery and valour in saving Lt James Martin who was lying a few feet from the German line, however he lost an eye, damaged a foot and was wounded 40 times in the process.

But when he came home he was given a hero’s welcome and was always a guest of honour at major football matches.

He also became the president of Carluke Rovers FC and held that position until his death. Picture to the right shows William Angus with Lord Newlands President of the Territorial Army Association on his right and Lt James Martin on his left.

Even after all these years, everyone has the upmost respect for Willie Angus and for all that he did.

A true hero and legend.

CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB’ S CONGRATULATIONS.

Corporal Angus was for two seasons connected with the Celtic Football Club, and Mr William Maley, the Secretary, has addressed a letter of congratulation to Cpl. Angus’s father.

He says:— ” I beg to offer you, on behalf of my club, and personally, our sincerest congratulations on the brilliant achievement of your son, Willie. That he may come back to you all safe and sound is now our most earnest prayer, and we trust that you may all be long spared to each other to happy and prosperous days. I can safely say that no club ever had a more willing or conscientious player, and one who always showed by his cleanness that fine spirit which has in his army life enabled him to do the deed which has earned him a world’s acclamation, and, I am sure brought great pride to the folks at home who have followed his career anxiously.”
