SFA to review Boruc's conduct after latest gesture to supporters
Published Date: 02 September 2008
The Celtic goalkeeper, who was at fault for Daniel Cousin's first-half opener, was taunted by the Rangers supporters after he gifted Kenny Miller his second goal which helped the visitors to a comprehensive win. A spokesman for the Scottish Football Association said: "We will be referring the incident to the review panel to see if there is a case to answer. We are trying to get it arranged for this week, but if not, early next week." After the Old Firm defeat, Celtic manager Gordon Strachan promised to speak to the Poland international. Boruc was axed from the Poland squad last week by national coach Leo Beenhakker, along with international team-mates Dariusz Dudka and Radoslaw Majewski, following allegations concerning their late-night behaviour in the aftermath of a friendly against Ukraine. The trio have been banned by the Polish FA for the World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and San Marino. Strachan alluded to the goals Boruc sloppily conceded as "bizarre", but would only say: "I will speak to Artur, see how he feels and we will analyse it."
The Sun Front Page Headline: "He's At It Again"
Front page quote: "Artur Boruc sparks another Old Firm flashpoint – as he gives Rangers fans a one-fingered salute yesterday. The controversial Pole made the obscene gesture when he was taunted…"
Two-page spread on pages four and five –
Side-bar with various witty captions and pictures of Boruc above them include… "Pope On A Dope", "Make 'Em Cross" etc., etc.
John Macmillan, general secretary of the RSA (and who didn't even see the gesture incidentally, said): "I often keep an eye on him because I am often asked to comment on something he has done. If that is the case, it is way over the top now. Something has to be done."
Apparently cops are looking into the incident, as well as several others, including a missile being thrown at the Rangers dug-out (news to me indeed).
Hoops' fan chief Tommy Dornan said: "The Rangers fan hounded him from start to finish."
Page 8 Editorial comment says: "Artur Boruc is in danger of becoming the laughing stock of Scottish football. He earned a police caution at Ibrox three years ago for offensive gestures he made before blessing himself. If he can't control himself, then his club must."
Bill Leckie: "Holy Goalie lives by the sneer, here he died by it. He'll be ashamed yet again to pick up the papers this morning and see himself acting like a ned."
Oh aye, and Leckie says Wattie's a genius. And a picture of Kenny Miller patting the Rangers badge on his chest. Bless.
