Speedy outside-right James Fisher joined Celtic in August 1898 from Aston Villa and made his debut in a 4-1 league win over St Mirren at Parkhead on September 3rd of that year.
Denny-born Fisher however proved to be a frustrating acquisition and for all his pace he was burdened by an inability to cross and shoot with any great accuracy.
He had a tough start, with Celtic losing in four of his first six league games, including a 4-0 defeat to Rangers who stormed the league that season winning all their matches in the then 18 match season.
He had actually scored a goal in each of his 2nd & 3rd last games for Celtic (in a 4-1 win over Dundee and 9-2 win over Clyde) so was ending on a high. It was a turn of form for him but it was the end of the road for him. His final match was a 8-3 victory over Partick Thistle in the league.
He was unfortunate to not play any Scottish Cup games with Celtic who went on to win the cup that season. With a reshuffle of the first team, new signing John Hodges was the preferred starter over the second half of the season.
In total, he made 10 senior league appearances for the Bhoys in the first half of season 1898/99 and scored three goals, so not a bad return.
After loan spells at Preston and East Stirling he eventually left Parkhead for good when he joined Newton Heath (a forerunner to Man Utd) in October 1900.
He later served with the Royal Engineers in the First World War.
He passed away prematurely aged just 44 in 1921.
