Joey Foran was an inside-forward who signed for Celtic from Greenlaw Strollers in early 1891.
He was loaned to St Mirren before making his Celtic first team league debut (in place of Peter Dowds) on 14th May 1892 when he scored in a 2-0 league victory over Leith Athletic at Parkhead. As it was a near end of league season match, the team was said to be weaker than expected and included also “M Flannagan” who little is known of.
He only made one further league appearance in a pulsating 4-3 victory over Renton on 20th Aug 1892 in the new season.
The match v Renton was the first of the league season, a campaign which Celtic were to go on to win the league title by just the one point over Rangers, the first league title in Celtic’s history. So Joey Foran, in some small way at least, played a part to help make history with the Club.
Joey Foran overall was to only play two league matches in total, with both matches being against now defunct Edinburgh sides The latter match v Renton appears to be one to very much look back on fondly, as well as the knowledge of being part of Celtic’s first league title winning squad.
He moved on to Johnstone FC in April 1894. He was replaced at Celtic by Sandy McMahon, a Celtic great, so no easy challenge for any incoming player to challenge for his place
